Intermediate Skills Series Courses

May 23rd: More Efficient Forward, Reverse and Ruddering Strokes

One of my original objectives when starting Chesapeake Kayak Adventures was to offer members high quality kayak instructional courses at very reasonable prices.  I’ve been searching high and low for the best way to do just that and have finally found it in the form of a kindred spirit by the name of Rick Wiebush.

Rick is from Catonsville and runs Cross Currents Sea Kayaking.  He is an American Canoe Association (ACA) Open Water Instructor and an Instructor Trainer (i.e. he trains people who want to be certified as ACA instructors).

Rick has been paddling for about 12 years and has been an instructor for six years.  He is known as having a pretty laid back, patient and humorous approach to teaching, and is very passionate about helping people ramp up their skills.  As part of his personal paddling development, Rick has participated in several expeditions to Baja including a month-long, 400 mile unsupported trip.  He also has been fortunate enough to have done paddling trips in the Exumas, Greenland, Wales, England, Australia and New Zealand.  He works mostly in Australia for his “real” job as a child welfare consultant.

Rick has put together a great three tiered program offering beginner, intermediate and advanced courses for Chesapeake Kayak Adventure members at extremely reasonable prices.  I will be along, helping Rick out on almost all of the classes in addition to taking instructor certification courses from Rick myself throughout the summer.

The Intermediate Skills Series Courses are "a la carte" courses designed for people who may have been kayaking for a while but have never had any formal instruction AND/OR for those who want to fine tune their existing skills.  We will focus on different skills each week and you can pick and choose which courses you want to take.  You'll come away from each session with better boat control skills or better rescue strategies and a lot more confidence.

This listing is for the May 23rd class at Triadelphia Reservoir which will focus on More Efficient Forward, Reverse and Ruddering strokes.

The additional courses in the series are

June 6th: Edging and Turning Strokes (sweep, pivot, low brace turn)

June 20th: Draw Strokes plus Bracing and Skulling (support strokes)

June 27th: Intermediate Rescues: Heel Hook Re-entry, Paddle Float, Eskimo Rescues

People taking these courses presumably have their own kayak but if you won't have time to load your boat before going to work rentals are available for an additional $20.00

Look for the postings for the other dates on the CKA calendar.  Also look for the Jumpstart Your Sea Kayaking Skills courses for beginners or those who have never had any formal training.  There will also be the Master's Progression Series which is a package of four evenings and one Saturday for intermediate paddlers wanting to take it to the next level.

There is a 4 person minimum for the class to take place with a 12 person maximum.  The $45.00 course fee must be paid by debit or credit card at the time you sign up.  The courses will take place rain or shine except in the most inclement conditions.  If your plans change and you are unable to attend, credit will be given toward future course offerings.

Chuck - I have not been able to find this with an updated day. I believe it's this Thursday (lost my pocket calendar). I have a conflict if that's correct. Will you update/confirm date? Is there someone you know of who wants the slot?

Good call with the weather last night! It was also good to have that experience together. Even if you drive 100+ miles to a put-in site, if the wind, water and weather aren't right, ya go for coffee or get out the beach chair instead.

Well the thunderstorms won tonight. The class will be rescheduled and we will have a date to run by everyone sometime id next week. Just in case anyone had doubts that calling it quits was the right thing to do .... It got significantly worse around 7:30 PM and hasn't stopped yet. I got more wet running from the car to the door than the entire time I stood outside while we were still there. Oh yeah there was more thunder and lightening, lots more of that too.

    Chuck,
Do I need a permit for this class from WSSC? If so can I get it by Thurs.?

    May 21, 2013

    • Chuck

Thanks Ed. I always forget that part but we have a lot of members who qualify.

They do still want you to get the free permit though. Just being able to prove you meet the requirement with a drivers license for example is not good enough to the WSSC police officers. They want to see the permit. What it basically boils down to is that they want to keep track of who is using the reservoir.

Great first class, already feel more confident. Can't wait for the next!

I think you hit the nail on the head with that one Mike. Improving your skills makes you feel more confident and makes paddling even more enjoyable and fun than it is for you already.

If anyone needs to drop, even at the 11th hour, I will happily take your place. I will plan on working earlier on Thursday and bringing my paddle stuff, although I would need a kayak as I'm not going to drag mine around all day in the vain hope of getting in.

Ugh. Hit the wrong button. I was trying to say I will check my email at 4pm. After that I will not be able to get notification.

I can't add any more people Mary, but if you can get someone to sell you their spot because they can't make it, I don't have a problem with that.

I know Rick! He is awesome! I was wondering if there is anything on self rescues and how to get back into a kayak etc?

  • Claire

If we rent kayaks for these classes, do you provide the paddles and pfds? I have no equipment of my own. Thanks!

Kathy - There are actually 4 separate Intermediate Courses offer on 4 different dates for $45.00 each. Each one covers a different aspect of paddling skills. There are currently no plans to offer more courses but it MIGHT be possible to repeat in late summer or early fall. No guarantees though

    May 13, 2013

  • Kathy L.

Will any of the intermediate classes be repeated? I am currently scheduled to go out of town on that date, and if that falls through this class will probably be full by then.

Rick is one of the best kayak instructors around! Great to see CKA and crosscurrents partnering! Can't wait!

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
