Intermediate Skills Series Courses
May 23rd: More Efficient Forward, Reverse and Ruddering Strokes
One of my original objectives when starting Chesapeake Kayak Adventures was to offer members high quality kayak instructional courses at very reasonable prices. I’ve been searching high and low for the best way to do just that and have finally found it in the form of a kindred spirit by the name of Rick Wiebush.
Rick is from Catonsville and runs Cross Currents Sea Kayaking. He is an American Canoe Association (ACA) Open Water Instructor and an Instructor Trainer (i.e. he trains people who want to be certified as ACA instructors).
Rick has been paddling for about 12 years and has been an instructor for six years. He is known as having a pretty laid back, patient and humorous approach to teaching, and is very passionate about helping people ramp up their skills. As part of his personal paddling development, Rick has participated in several expeditions to Baja including a month-long, 400 mile unsupported trip. He also has been fortunate enough to have done paddling trips in the Exumas, Greenland, Wales, England, Australia and New Zealand. He works mostly in Australia for his “real” job as a child welfare consultant.
Rick has put together a great three tiered program offering beginner, intermediate and advanced courses for Chesapeake Kayak Adventure members at extremely reasonable prices. I will be along, helping Rick out on almost all of the classes in addition to taking instructor certification courses from Rick myself throughout the summer.
The Intermediate Skills Series Courses are "a la carte" courses designed for people who may have been kayaking for a while but have never had any formal instruction AND/OR for those who want to fine tune their existing skills. We will focus on different skills each week and you can pick and choose which courses you want to take. You'll come away from each session with better boat control skills or better rescue strategies and a lot more confidence.
This listing is for the May 23rd class at Triadelphia Reservoir which will focus on More Efficient Forward, Reverse and Ruddering strokes.
The additional courses in the series are
June 6th: Edging and Turning Strokes (sweep, pivot, low brace turn)
June 20th: Draw Strokes plus Bracing and Skulling (support strokes)
June 27th: Intermediate Rescues: Heel Hook Re-entry, Paddle Float, Eskimo Rescues
People taking these courses presumably have their own kayak but if you won't have time to load your boat before going to work rentals are available for an additional $20.00
Look for the postings for the other dates on the CKA calendar. Also look for the Jumpstart Your Sea Kayaking Skills courses for beginners or those who have never had any formal training. There will also be the Master's Progression Series which is a package of four evenings and one Saturday for intermediate paddlers wanting to take it to the next level.
There is a 4 person minimum for the class to take place with a 12 person maximum. The $45.00 course fee must be paid by debit or credit card at the time you sign up. The courses will take place rain or shine except in the most inclement conditions. If your plans change and you are unable to attend, credit will be given toward future course offerings.
