Paddle the Potomac - Indigo Landing to Wilson Bridge

RSVP's for this event open tonight, Monday, May 20th at 10:15 PM

The actual attendance limit for this paddle is 30 paddlers.  6 spots have been set aside for people who will be renting kayaks.  If you are a renter on the waiting list I will move you to the attending list.   Those spots not filled by renters 24 hours before the paddle will be filled with members on the waiting list who have paid the voluntary dues.  Everyone has the same chance to sign up for the first 24 slots.

I did this paddle a couple times last year but to give credit where it's due I should mention that Jake or perhaps more appropriately Gloria was the inspiration for it.

We'll be on the water promptly at 10:00 AM from the Indigo Landing boat ramp on Dangerfield Island to paddle downstream on the Potomac for a different perspective on some of the sights of Old Town Alexandria including places like to Torpedo Factory.  We will continue downstream for to the Wilson Bridge which can be some magnificent architectural artwork when viewed from below.  There will be a short stop for snacks and rest rooms at Jones Point Park which is under the bridge on the Virginia side.  Depending on the tides the dock at Jones Point can be 4 feet above the water level making getting out of your boat a little more fun.

The Potomac in this area is big open water where winds and motor boat traffic can create a significant chop.  While it can also be calm this is probably not a paddle for those without a little experience paddling in rougher water as we won't know what the conditions will be until we get there.

I think the total distance paddled will be in the 7 mile range although those are as Ralph calls them "Chuck miles".  He just doesn't realize that I'm quoting nautical miles which are slightly longer than statute miles.  :)  We should be back to the take out around mid afternoon to give those of you attending the Washing Canoe Club Dock Party plenty of time to freshen up and change clothing for party.

There are rental kayaks which include a paddle and PFD available for this event at the weekend price of $50.00.  To reserve a kayak simply answer the rental question when you RSVP.

What a great day with a great group or people. People wonder why CKA paddles are so successful and look at me. They're never going to figure it out until they look at each and everyone of you. Thanks for coming everyone.

Excellent paddle Chuck! The water was calm and I got to paddle in a little sprinkle rain which was delightful. Got a good sunburn so I know it's "for real" paddlin' season at last! Thanks Chuck and Kimmie for organizing and making it so much fun. Kimmie, it was so great to see you out on the water ;-)

I've forgotten if Marine Dr. to the put-in can only be accessed by heading south or north on the GW Memorial Parkway. Can anybody help? I'll check back in the morning. Thanks

Yes Mary it can. This one is easy to find compared to Columbia Island.

I did this paddle last year with Jake's group, I believe. We went as far as the lighthouse at jones point, waited for the stragglers, and then to my surprise turned around and went back o the launch site for lunch/ party. I am used to chuck's marathon paddles :-) and thought we were just taking a break. I found it to be a not-difficult paddle, and I am no expert, but the conditions were good that day. If jones point is too hard to land/launch at, it is not unreasonable to return to origin. Great views of National and the planes, and of Alexandria and the Wilson bridge.

My plus 1 is Merri Raleigh, also a CKA member. We usually launch at Gravely point park ( on the north side of the airport ) and head north. This will be a nice change to go south. WILL WE GO AS FAR AS THE DYKE MARSH WILDLIFE PRESERVE, it looks to be 4.5 crow miles one way. Never been there. Any body have info?

    May 20, 2013

    • Deke

It is certainly possible to paddle from Daingerfield Island to Dyke Marsh but if you include paddling the marsh, the total trip would be 11 or 12 miles which means either a seriously long day of paddling or some really fast kayaks (and some hard paddling). As it is the trip as planned will be about 7 miles. If you want to visit Dyke Marsh sometime, either start from Jones Point Park (free though with a very high dock that is very difficult to launch from) or from Bellehaven Marina ($3 launch fee).

10 A.M. or P.M? Want to make sure. Both times are listed. Thanks!

    May 20, 2013

    • Chuck

Thanks for pointing out one of my absent minded errors Jon. It is 10:00 AM and I have corrected the wrong one.

      May 20, 2013

  • Louis S.

I'm sure this is 10 A.M. and not P.M. which is what the heading says, based on the more detailed description.
