The Crack of Dawn Day Paddle at Triadelphia Big Branch.

The Crack of Dawn Day Paddle at Triadelphia Big Branch

I really love being on the water early in the morning.  I just don't like to get up early enough to make it happen often.  If I am going to do it, I'm going to do it early enough to do it right so YES, 5:30 AM is the on the water time for this paddle.  Plan to arrive early enough to have your boat and gear ready to launch promptly by then.

If I've read my the calendars correctly most of the school teachers in the group should be off for the summer and the retirees are up then anyway without anything better to do (just teasing) so let's do a really early paddle.

Sunrise on June 18th should be about 5:40 AM so we will be on the water for a few minutes as the sun starts to come up over the horizon and mother nature comes to life in all her splendid glory on the reservoir.  The fish will be jumping, the herons, ospreys. eagles and other water birds will be looking for breakfast.  If we're really lucky it will all be happening in the hazy glow of a morning mist on the water that disappears as we paddle.  Bring your camera because there isn't a better time to take potentially awesome pictures.

I'm going to regret posting this at about 4:30 in the morning on the 18th but am super confident that I will be happy I did by about 8:30 when I expect us to be getting off the water.  The pace will be extremely leisurely with a focus on communing with nature rather than paddling past.  There's a great little breakfast place in Ashton which isn't too far away where those who are interested can get a cup of coffee and something to eat after the paddle.

Triadelphia Reservoir is owned by the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC).  To paddle here you must purchase a $6.00 day use permit or a $70.00 season permit.  Please purchase a permit or be prepared to suffer the consequences.

With over 13 miles of water between Triadelphia and Rocky Gorge Reservoirs and 7 different kayak launch sites we'll visit the WSSC properties often during the season and I suspect regular paddlers in the area will find that the season pass will pay for itself quickly.  You can purchase day or season permits on line and print them out at home.  The WSSC website is located here http://www.wsscwater.com

Rental boats are available for this paddle at a special day rate of $35 which includes the paddle and PFD.  Just answer the rental question when you RSVP to reserve one.

What a treat to be out on the water at that hour to witness a few of nature's early morning secrets. It was a pleasure to share it with new & old friends alike. I'd do it again in a heartbeat. Thanks, Kimmie & Chuck.

It is amazing the beauty that hides in the early morning mist.

Even considering the lack of sleep that it caused this paddle was worth it. Thanks for coming everyone.

One of the best I attended to date. Great time of day to be out. Water was calm and scenery beautiful. Got to paddle relaxed and talk to lots of people. The little excursion up the Patuxent was great fun. Thanks Kimmie.

This was a great paddle, it was absolutely serene. Words can't describe how the weather plays a part... one minute it would be so clear then a light fog set in. And yes, we beat the rain!!!!

  • John B.

Wonderful! And fearless leader is to be commended on the timing, the rain started less than an hour after I got home.

This was my favorite paddle to date - the water was so smooth and flat, the deer and eagles were about, and the company was lovely.

Something unexpected came up. Hope there will be another one sometime.

As a professional photographer I will tell you all this is the most magnificent time of day for pictures. Hopefully we will have a clear day.
I have been playing golf at the crack of dawn for years and now have an opportunity to enjoy that time from a new prospective on the water. I Look forward to it and paddling with the group.

I am bummed. Have work responsibilities that i need to be in DC too early to do this paddle. Have a great time!

sorry plans have changed and I can't make it on Tuesday. Have a great time.

I had really intended to keep this paddle on the smaller scale but doe to the popularity have added all of you on the wait list to the attending list and CLOSED the paddle to new RSVP's. Hopefully natural attrition between now and next Tuesday will thin out the ranks a little bit and keep the group size down.

Chuck - thanks for the wait list - I made it! I should be fine tomorrow night and next week, but I'm not committing to anything for the weekend (except maybe swap meet - still have a kayak, spray jackets, and other misc gear to clear out...)

And you just keep egging me on. :)

I'm so glad I read all the comment. I realize it said...The crack of dawn....

    May 21, 2013

    • Chuck

I have a response to that but I'm not going there. :)

I guess I just won't be going to bed that Monday night :), but greeting the sunrise has always been worth the lack of sleep. Another good idea, Chuck.

Hmmmm .... just wondering how many quad, half caf, venti, nonfat lattes that's going to take. :)

An IV would do nicely, thank you!

  • MaryB

Any hope for a wait list, Chuck?? Went to get on one but it doesn't exist.

    May 21, 2013

    • Chuck

I really didn't think I needed one for this Mary but I guess all the talk about paddling dawn's crack has people really excited to ... attend. There is one now

      May 21, 2013

  • Dawn S

Chuck, You have even named a paddle after me! What lengths you will go to to get me to paddle! Sorry I can't attend, need to work plus still need to pick up the clips I ordered for rack to fit new car. Someday, my paddling life will become the priority at the crack of dawn.

    May 21, 2013

    • Chuck

I resisted Yoshi's lead into the joke earlier but you all keep setting me up for it and I'm not sure I can any longer. Despite the temptation of Dawn and cracks and racks I'm really not going there but if you need help with your rack let me know. :)

      May 21, 2013

  • Louis S.

Wow. This one "sold out" fast!! Maybe this implies some prefer communing with nature a bit more vs. faster paddles. Enjoy!

    May 21, 2013

  • Chuck

Wow, I didn't expect this to get so many takers so fast. Are you all nuts? :) I want to keep the group size relatively small for this one to preserve the ambience of the morning but with this kind of turn out I will try to do one a month during the summer.

    May 21, 2013

    • Toni

"Are you all nuts" is that a rhetorical question?

      May 21, 2013

    • Chuck

In retrospect I guess it was. Okay I've been silly enough for a couple days now.

      May 21, 2013

  • Lynda M.

Wow it sounds worth getting up for which is saying a lot coming from me!

    May 21, 2013

    • Chuck

And as I've picked on everyone else I should mention that hiding under all that hair Lynda has a flat spot on her head from sleeping in so late every day. :)

      May 21, 2013

  • elaine g.

sadly I am changing my RSVP to know cause I can't come in late to work that day. I would really like to get up and do this on a Sat. or Sunday. Actually I would really like to do this everyday but need to be off the water too early.

    May 21, 2013

    • Chuck

I think it's just because you didn't like being labeled "nuts". Get over it Elaine. :)
