VOLUNTEER - 2013 Maryland Special Olympics State Kayaking Competition

One of our Ranger friends from Patapsco State Park has asked CKA to help her help her out at the Maryland Special Olympics State Kayaking Competition at Piney Run Park north of Sykesville in Carroll County on Saturday October 5th.

She's the one who is always very kind to us when she finds us on one of those rare occasions where we're still loading our kayaks after sunset at Daniels.  She indicated they hadn't done so well with kayak volunteers last year and I promised her it would be vastly different this year.  I'd appreciate all of you helping to make that promise come true.

So why should those of you who already have enough T-shirts and don't need the free lunch participate?  Well of course there is the cause itself which is one of the best ones out there.  I promise you lots of feel good moments but a really big plus is the opportunity to paddle at Piney Run Park for free.  Carroll County charges at least twice as much as any place else to throw a kayak in the water.  Here's you change to paddle on one of the nicest man made lakes in the area for FREE.

If you're not sure that you're kayaking skills are up to providing the necessary help, that's okay because they need help with a number of non-kayaking positions essential to a quality competition.

They prefer people who can work a full shift from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM and you should only sign up if you are able to do that but something tells me that if enough volunteers turn out, you may not have to work the full 8 hours.

While I appreciate you signing up on Meetup so that we know who is going to attend from CKA the only way to really sign up to volunteer is to do so at the link above.  Be sure to reference CKA as your group affiliation when you sign up.

This is for an exceptionally good cause in CKA's backyard.  We need to be exceptionally well represented at this event.  I will see you there.  There is at least a remote chance that Kimmie will be in good enough shape to volunteer in some capacity even if she won't be getting back in a kayak for quite a while yet.

I'd really like to see at least 30 of us attending this event.  Thanks in advance for volunteering.  C'mon, I'm begging you ... Volunteer for this event.

I'll even throw in two free rental boats to those who are willing to volunteer all day but don't have a boat.  Just be one of the first two to answer the free rental question to get one.  You should be more than a beginner to claim one but don't have to be much more than that.

Kimmie , that always fun & positive personality of yours is infused in the fleet. In that way, you will be there contributing towards a great time.

Pictures will have to suffice so we'll do it right & show ya to prove how proud of the group you deseve to be:-).

      Keep on felling better!

It was an honor to be able to provide support and assistance.

While it probably could have been better coordinated as far as kayak support this was truly a worthwhile cause to support. Thank you all so very much for coming! The good news is that the President of Special Olympics of Maryland came up to me afterwards looking for ways to make it better next year. Yeah I probably got sucked in and we will be back next year but it will probably be better and the cause will still be just as worthy.

Now that I signed up: What will we need to do?!

Mollie - Not really certain how it goes from here but as long as you went to the website above and registered to volunteer, I believe we will be getting an email with more information from Special Olympics as the date gets closer.

Uh Oh! I didn't see the link, or maybe I did and filled out the volunteer form and forgot? I haven't seen any mail from the Special Olympics. I'd be very disappointed if I couldn't go for possibly having overlooked that. Can anyone confirm if I did or if there's any chance of still coming??

Unfortunately, I signed up too late for the event and was also told they didn't need more volunteers. Sorry I missed this one. Glad others will be able to help.

Just got an e-mail from Ashley:

NOTE: Due to overwhelming volunteer support, we have exceeded our volunteer numbers (Go Volunteers!!) and closed volunteer registration. If you are receiving this email, you are confirmed to volunteer. We will not be accepting any additional volunteers from this point forward. Great job guys!

Well fate has once more slapped me in the face on being able to do anything. I'm not going to be able to make it to this event afterall. I have sent an email to Ashley stating this. I'm really looking forward to when my employer will let me come back to the Frederick area, instead of keeping me in northern New Jersey. For those attending this wonderful event, I wish you all the best of luck. It is for a good cause and I regret that I will not be able to make it.

I heard about this from DJ who is hosting this event for WKC Meetup group. So I signed up on their webpage. But I wanted you to know that I am also going to support my friends with WKA Meetup. I am looking forward to helping this wonderful organization and especially their brave participants.

OK, I have done the survey monkey form, and the SOMD volunteer application too. I'm ready for event volunteer info now.

I'm looking forward to help out at this event. I just hope that there are no other unforseen events that take place to pull me from attending. I still don't like it that I missed the Kent Narrows paddle.
