Paddle Mattawoman Creek

RSVP's for this event open Thursday, October 3rd at 10:30 PM.

The total attendance limit for this event is 30 people but 6 spots have been reserved for individuals renting kayaks.  Renters on the waiting list will receive priority and be moved to the attending list until all 30 spots are filled.

The tides are right on Sunday, October 13th to get way back into Mattawoman so..........

While numerous other places are better known for their wildlife, Mattawoman can hold up to the best of them.  It was as though the bald eagles sat and posed for us making it easy for me to get the picture to the left with my little waterproof Olympus point and shoot.  If you're a nature paddler this one is for you.

Mattawoman looks like it's a long way away on the map but traveling on I-295 thorough DC, my odometer found it was a few miles less from my place than it is to Jug Bay.  We're starting a little later than usual so we can ride the incoming high tide back into all of the nooks and crannies where the wildlife hangs out.  Please remember that our start times are the ON THE WATER TIME.  Please arrive early enough to have your boat and gear ready to paddle promptly at 11:00 AM.

The total distance paddled will probably only be 7 or 8 miles at a relatively slow pace as we weave through tree falls and other obstacles to get as far back in as we can.  Composite boats are fine for this paddle but you may find yourself occasionally waiting on one side of a log with only a couple inches of water clearance while the rest of the group in plastic boats checks out what's on the other side.  Plan on being on the water  4 to 5 hours and pack a lunch for a break somewhere along the way.

There are rental boats available for this paddle at a price of $50.00 for the day delivered to the put in with paddle and PFD.  To reserve one email answer the rental question when you RSVP.

Did you go past the bridged? There's a very nice canopy of trees there. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=10201089242127593&l=8302938473650187160

Never seen so much of the creek! Tons of water and new areas open for exploration and LOTS of flowers! Thanks, Chuck!

Another wonderful paddle. Very unique paddling through the "forest". Lot's of wildlife, but the huge beaver and snake were my top sitings. Fun excursions including the one where a few of us got wet. Successful team rescue- thanks to all involved. Hot chai tea at the end was great, Mike. Thanks for another great day, Chuck.

A gorgeous day on Mattawoman. The rain abated as forecast leaving water levels unusually high which along with high tide let us get into places no one ever gets in to. What a great day with a great group of people. Thanks for coming everyone.

The paddle is still on for anyone who is wondering. The chance of rain in the area around Mattawoman drops to 30% about the time we will be getting on the water. As you all know by now that means a 70% chance of sunny blue shies.

Between the weather and the migraine I have tonight, I have to give up on the paddle tomorrow. Hope it's a good day for ya'll.

So glad I got off the wait list for this one! I decided to cancel for the trip tomorrow - too soggy a forecast for me. So I'm looking forward to getting out on Sunday - not too many paddling days left to 2013.

Not prepared for this type of weather this year. Takes different gear that u am still acquiring. Hate to muss it but safety for all prevails.

Hi Chuck. I would like to go on this paddle. I have my own boat and gear so I don't need to rent from you. The waiting list is long enough that my chance of going is about zero. I would be willing to pay the rental fee anyway if that would guarantee a spot on the attending list. This would save you the trouble of hauling another boat and gear and I would get to paddle What do you think?

Hey Todd - As much as I like your idea, it just wouldn't work for me. At that rate I should just start auctioning off spots on my paddles to the highest bidder. While that might be financially rewarding for me, I don't think it would work for the good of the group.

Alright. I just really wanted to paddle with your group and I guess I still could but I prefer my own boat. Thanks.
