Hike Cunningham Falls plus Hog, Wolf and Chimney Rocks - 8 Mile Loop

  • Jan 26, 2014 · 10:30 AM
  • Cotoctin Mountain National Park Visitors Center

The weather for this weekend is again looking a little cold and windy to paddle comfortably if the forecast proves accurate.  We have a few crazy members participating in the Special Olympics Polar Bear Plunge on Saturday so I thought we'd hike on Sunday

We will meet a the parking lot of the Catoctin Mountain National Park Visitors Center on Central Park Road.  Please plan to arrive with plenty of time to be ready to start hiking at 10:30 AM.

While hiking this loop we will experience Cunningham Falls, Hog Rock, Blue Ridge Summit, Thurmont Vista, Wolf Rock, and Chimney Rock. This loop combines moderate and strenuous trails for a great day of hiking. We should be back to the cars a somewhere between 3:30 and 4:00.

Bring your camera and something to eat.  We'll hike at a leisurely pace and stop at many of the exciting and beautiful vistas to capture a moment or several, that will leave a lasting impression on your mind, body, and soul for a long time to come.

Beautiful hike in the snow. I was tempted to climb up on those rocks for the extra view, but restrained myself for a change. Hank, "It's my stick!".

6 inches of snow and temps in the high teens/low 20's did make this hike a lot more challenging than usual. Still I found myself wishing that we had done the full 8 miles instead of cutting it short to 5 when we got back to the parking lot. Thanks for coming everyone.

Great hike, snow made it challenging but a good and invigorating workout.

It was tough walking in the snow but wonderful at the same time. There were times when I might have liked having my snow shoes ! As usual a

At this point, I'm a maybe with a good possibility of attending. I might need to head out for work travel on Sunday for a Monday meeting. Will update mid-week when I know more.
