Kent Island Paddle Series for 2014

NOTE:  You can NOT sign up to participate in KIP on the CKA Meetup site.  Due to the commitment required and special nature of this event you need to email Marshall directly and request to participate.   Please read everything below carefully and email Marshall only if you are willing to commit to attending all of the sessions.

Kent Island Paddle {KIP-9 14’}

This is the ninth year for a most unusual paddle.

The KIP series is for paddlers who want to have a distance challenge, build their skills and knowledge of paddling. It is meant for those that join in, to have a bonding experience with each other, the paddle and meet their goals. For the practice sessions it is a group effort to paddle together. This is a paddle geared towards someone who wants to practice and get in shape over the next several months in preparation for a personal distance paddle. The practice series is a group effort, the final paddle is a personal effort. Your speed and distance is up to you at this time.

It is a paddle where we have six practice paddles once a month, from April thru Sept., culminating in a final paddle in September.

Kent Island is located just after the Bay Bridge or before, depending where you live, surrounded by the Chesapeake Bay and the Chester River. We will experience wind, waves, currents, fetch, rain, heat, dead calm and of course distance. The distance comes in increments as we progress. Your personal paddling goal, in distance may be 12 to 15 miles, or 15 to 20 miles or 20 to 25miles or to circumnavigate the entire Island of 34 miles. You may use this as a yearly stepping stone and increase your distance and learning each year

During the practice sessions there are always spots to bail and you will be picked up.

This is a vehicle that is available to you. This is a great chance to accelerate your learning curve in paddling and understanding of the Chesapeake Bay. KIP is there for those paddlers that want to experience real time paddling in many kinds of weather that the Chesapeake Bay can throw at us, to learn those skills to advance your paddling skills, no matter what they are now from Beginner to Advance paddler. This is where it starts.

The first two sessions will be open to advanced beginners, then the paddle will be closed. These two sessions are a "get to know you paddle". We have former KIPPERS joining in with each paddle. They are there because they enjoy this paddle and they want to be there for the new paddlers with all their experiences. Last year we had eighteen new paddlers and eighteen KIPPERS paddling with us!

Each paddler will be screened and you will be expected to have the minimum requirements of pfd, spray skirt, appropriate clothes for the water temperature, pump and paddle float. This is a real commitment to show up for the practices. We know CKA and CPA have a lot of things going on but we have found missing a session puts you behind in the series.

So think about how serious you are in growing in your sport and join us in the KIP series.

If you have questions about this paddle give a call or email. Tell us something about yourself and the kayak you are paddling.

    The time commitment can't be made, but I'm hoping CKA will have a few KI social paddles in their agenda!

      Our Chesapeake Bay Environmental Center Paddles pretty much match that description. We mange to get there a couple times a year and "Kimmie Beach" is the perfect place to swim and socialize

    I see a bunch of you have signed up here on the CKA Meetup site to indicate that you want a spot on the Kent Island Paddle Series. I'm just hoping that you all have sent Marshall an email to let him know. Trying to make some things work within the Meetup system just doesn't work so we have decided to handle registration for this one via email. If you haven't sent an email using the Meetup system to indicate you want a spot won't do much good.

      I'm sorry. I don't want to sound like I'm nagging about this issue. Just please don't be upset if you don't get a spot on KIP and you didn't send an email. This is a really great opportunity that we have to offer CKA members this year and unfortunately like most things we do, there will be more people who want to do it than we will be able to accommodate.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
