Sugarloaf Mountain Hike

We were able to get a paddle in last weekend but Mother Nature remains fickle about getting around to bringing us spring kayaking weather so here's anther hike.

I'd lived in the area for 23 years before making it to Sugarloaf.  I had always looked at it from I-270 and laughed at the fact they called it a mountain, casting aside any thought of ever going there.  Some friends dragged me kicking and screaming to a hike there a couple years ago.  I was impressed.

Sugarloaf is privately owned and managed by the Stronghold Corporation.  Both state and national park services could take lessons from them.  Their facilities and trail maintenance are impressive.  Plus it is beautiful and they actually have garbage cans.

Sugarloaf is also an extremely popular destination so I've scheduled the start time a little earlier in hopes that everyone can find parking.  Arrive a little early if you can.  We'll meet at the West View parking area that is furthest up but it's a relatively short walk from the lower East View parking area if the top lot is full.

I would call most of the trails moderate although the ten minute climb to the top is pretty strenuous.  Pack a lunch for a break somewhere around the midpoint and plan on stopping by the Sugarloaf Winery with me after the hike for some cheese, crackers and a $5 to $10 glass of wine.  A bit pricey but good stuff for Maryland wine.  We will hit the trail promptly at 10:00 AM

Randy and Iare coming as long as there's no snow or ice and he doesn't have his shoulder surgery this week. He tore his rotator cuff and bicep during that last icy hike. No paddling for probably Six months :-(

Ow - sorry to hear Randy's injury was so serious! I had hoped to hear it was just bruised. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Surgery's next Wednesday at 2. We'll pass on the hike since the ground's not clear. Thanks for the well wishes.

Sorry about the last minute cancellation. I hurt my knee (again) earlier this week. I was hoping it be better enough to do the hike, but no such luck.

Meetup has been under a DDoS Attack for almost 24 hours now. This is the first time since yesterday morning that I have been able to post something. The hike is on for tomorrow regardless of whether Meetup is online or not

Just wondering about likely trail conditions on Saturday following the snow, thaw, freeze, rinse and repeat. Forecast calls for a totally mixed bag...
    Any ideas Chuck?

The forecast I just looked at has it at least several degrees above freezing, mostly sunny and no precipitation for Thursday, Friday and Saturday. That is a marked improvement over what I remember reading earlier today. I suspect it'll be a great hike although it might be a little muddy in spots but it's really way too far out to know much yet.
