Cherry Blossom Peak Bloom Paddle

  • Apr 10, 2014 · 10:30 AM
  • Potomac River - Columbia Island Marina Boat Ramp

National Cherry Blossom Festival Peak Bloom Paddle

There are spots reserved for renters at all of our paddles even if the paddle is otherwise full.  Renters and members who have paid the voluntary annual dues will receive priority on the wait list.

The National Park Service  has announced that the Peak Bloom for 2014 will occur between April 8th and April 12th.  It hasn't been nearly as warm this spring as it was last year but I'm hoping they got the peak bloom right this time.  I think we should celebrate by paddling on the Potomac with an awesome view of the monuments and the cherry blossoms!

We'll be on the water promptly at 10:00 AM from the Columbia Island Marina boat ramp.  Study a map carefully before heading off to Columbia Island.  It is ONLY accessible from the south bound lanes of the George Wasington Parkway.  If you miss the turn off it will take at least 10 minutes to make the 2 U-turns necessary to have a second shot at it.

We will paddle up stream against the current to Rossevelt Island where we will stop for snacks and a break and then depending on the tides take the back channel to the the boat ramp.  We should be back to the take out no later than 3:00 PM with plenty of time to catch a sandwich and a drink at the Marina.

Unfortunately I'm absolutely certain that water temperatures will not be in a range where we can waive the Cold Water Attire Requirements this year so Cold Water Attire is required for this paddle.  If you don't know what that means you can learn more here http://www.meetup.com/Chesapeake-Kayak-Adventures/messages/boards/thread/38728872 You will not be allowed to participate in this paddle without the appropriate cold water attire.

There are rental kayaks (including a paddle and PFD) available for this paddle at special weekend price of $55.00, BUT YOU MUST HAVE YOUR OWN COLD WATER ATTIRE. Please answer the rental question when you RSVP to request one.

Beautiful day on the water. Cherry blossoms were full and gorgeous. We saw a very industrious beaver working on his home, ducks and geese that floated along with us ,a turtle that liked having his picture taken, and some sculling racers up close. And we witnessed a great group effort to help Howard back into his boat. Sorry you could not finish with us Howard, hope to see you back on the water soon.

The National Park Service says the cherry trees reached peak bloom today. Couldn't have timed it better if I say so myself. It was a beautiful day on the Potomac even though spring winds played with us a little bit. The winds did hit 20 MPH at Reagan National about 90 minutes after we were off the water. Thanks for coming everyone.

Have fun! Great to hear that the pednucles finally elongated. I was getting concerned. For those of us unable to paddle, take a peak at the blossom cam. Cherry blossoms are a beautiful fluffy white with the Washington Monument (and cranes) as a back drop. http://www.earthcam.com/usa/dc/cherryblossoms/

For directions: on iPhone, using Apple Maps app, I put in the coordinates [masked],[masked] instead of the address. It seems to work best that way.

At least for me, it worked better than Google Maps on the computer, better than Mapquest on the computer or iPhone (MQ works not at all this way on the iPhone for this place by name or coordinates, though is superior for other locations) and it works better than Google Maps on the phone.

OMG! The peduncles have elongated! I just love saying that. That means peak bloom should occur between the 9th and the 14th.
