Magothy River Exploration 15+ Miles

Volunteers from the Magothy River Association ( http://www.magothyriver.org ) did a bunch of old fashioned hard work at Beachwood Park last fall to improve what Anne Arundel County calls a "Future Park".   I drove over there today to check out what they had done.  The very first thing I saw was some new off street parking.

The unfortunate news is that while they have cleaned the area up quite a bit, clearing fallen tress and removing debris and invasive species, the final 50 feet to the water remains quite difficult to negotiate with a 17 foot sea kayak.

It may now be possible to maneuver a boat through the trees to left of the concrete structures above, but we won't know for sure until we try.

One of our objectives for the paddle will be to locate another Anne Arundel County   "Future Park" called Spriggs Farm Park from the water.  You can learn more about Spriggs Farm Park here http://bayweekly.com/articles/where-we-live-steve-carr/article/last-farm-magothy  The distance of Spriggs Farm from Beachwood guarantees at least a 15 mile round trip.

Cold water attire is REQUIRED for this paddle as the water temps are still quite cold.  If you have your own cold water attire, there are a couple rental boats available for this paddle.  To request one, just email Chuck by clicking on the mail link in his profile.

The Magothy has been and remains one of my most favorite paddling destinations in the metropolitan area.  Come paddle with us to see why.  10:30 is the "on the water time". Plan to arrive with plenty of time to have your boat and gear ready to launch promptly by then.  Pack a lunch for a stop at Dobbins Island or one of the other numerous beaches along the way.  I expect to be back to the take out around 4:00ish.

Chuck, can you send me your cell via email? I was advised not to post my number last year. Thanks.

I might be there. Is there a number I can call someone tomorrow morning?

So sorry to have to miss this one, especially I really look forward to it. After loading the kayak and inspect the car, I just discover I have a flat tire.

Is the Saniels paddle still on fir April 2 as well? Chuck, are you doing both?

    March 30, 2014

    • Chuck

Yup ... I can't wait for a full day of paddling.

I will see you in the evening. I will pass on Magothy this time. First time out this year. Don't want to over do it. Have fun.

We're having such wonderful weather this year that I've already had to cancel or reschedule more events this year than I have in the past 5 - 6 years combined. The marine forecast has a gale warning (34 to 47 MPH winds) for today that the National Weather Service indicates may be extended into Monday. Even if the gale warning isn't extended we're still looking at winds in the high teens and low twenties with gusts that are about twice that. Rather than anguish over this decision through out the night and making a call in the morning, I'm making the call now. THIS PADDLE IS RESCHEDULED FOR WEDNESDAY, APRIL 2nd at the same time and location. If this affects your ability to attend, please change your RSVP to reflect that fact.

I guess your uncanny weather luck has run out.

      It will be back.

Hey gang, I'm bummed too but the Weather Service has extended the gale warning to Monday morning. A gale warning means that winds of 34 to 47 MPH are imminent or occurring. Let's hope that we've gotten a couple of years worth of reschedulings and cancelations out of the way already and that we have great weather the rest of the season.

I am also bummed. I forgot to request no wind for tomorrow.

    1 · March 30, 2014

  • Gail D.

I'm totally bummed. I only have every other Monday off.

    March 30, 2014

  • Aht

Please don't cancel! It will be much less windy both Tuesday and Wednesday.

    March 30, 2014

  • Chuck

Just a heads up ... The current forecast is now calling for 20 MPH winds with 40 MPH gusts on Monday morning. Obviously if that holds true this paddle will be canceled. I am going to have faith that the forecast is wrong but please be sure to check here before you head out Monday Morning. I will post a decision here by 7:00 AM Monday morning.

For those who are interested you might want to get there especially early Monday morning. Paul Spadaro, the head of the Magothy River Association is going to meet us at 9:00 AM to show us some of the improvements they've made to the park to improve the experience for groups like ours. He assures me that he has a better way to the water for us.

I was in the area and walked around a bit. It is looking more like a park and more inviting.

Well, I accidentally said yes because I misread it as a Sunday paddle!

    March 25, 2014

    • Chuck

Are you feeling okay? You weren't looking well the other day. Maybe it could get worse by Monday morning

      2 · March 26, 2014

    • Jaclin G

Yeah, cough cough. But sadly, it would leave someone else in a bad position if I played hooky that particular day and I can't do that. Otherwise cough, cough sure would be feeling bad.

Saying "yes" before I check with the boss. They owe me three days for working weekends so I don't think it will be a problem.

    March 25, 2014

  • Chuck

Opps! I mistakenly posted this for Sunday the 30th when I meant to post it for Monday the 31st. This is a weekday paddle. Sorry
