Monocacy River Adventure with Shuttle -The First 12 Miles

Monocacy River Adventure
The First 12 Miles

RSVP's for this paddle open Wednesday April 9th at 9:00 PM

The Cold Water Attire Requirement for this Paddle has been removed.

Saturday, April 19, 2014 will find us setting shuttle at 10:00 AM from the Devilbiss Bridge Boat Ramp on the Monocacy River for a  11.7 paddle with the current from the Route 77 Bridge on the Monocacy to  Debilbiss Bridge. Please plan to arrive at Devilbiss Bridge Boat Ramp no later than 10:00 AM.  I will have the CKA trailer for the shuttle so we can leave as many cars as possible at Devilbiss.

This section of the Monocacy is mostly moving flatwater with a few minor (Class I) whitewater features.  Nothing most parents wouldn't let their kids go down in an inner tube.  We'll keep a close eye on water levels to ale sure the Monocacy isn't a raging torrent the day of the paddle.  Composite boats are definitely not recommended for this paddle.

Actual paddle time should be a around 4 hours.  Factoring in a couple of breaks, a stop for lunch and shuttle time will make this at least a 6 or 7 hour event.  We did this paddle a couple of times last year and with good weather conditions it is an exceptionally beautiful paddle.  One of them was what I called magical it was so nice

There are rental boats available for this paddle at a price of $50.00 for the day delivered to the put in, including paddle and PFD.  Please answer the rental question when you RSVP to reserve one.

Lorah's Neosport calf height paddling boots seem to have gone missing at this paddle. Is there any chance someone saw them or took them by mistake?

It's all too frequent that the last paddle I did is my favorite paddle. Great group and a great time on the Monocacy today. Thanks for coming everyone. Don't miss the remaining 28 miles to the Potomac. It only gets better

Can't wait for the trip. I have a minivan if that helps with shuttling people or kayaks. See you Saturday!

Meghan, I somehow missed that this upcoming weekend is Easter so Eileen and I can't make this paddle. Hopefully that get's your +1 in! Have a great paddle everyone!

Good news everyone. Inland water temps actually hit 63 degrees in some areas yesterday. As a result I can remove the cold water attire requirements for this paddle. The Bay and it's tributary rivers will probably take another two weeks to warm up enough so there will still be cold water attire requirements on those paddles. Keep in mind though that just because water temps are 60 or above doesn't mean that the water is suddenly safe.

Hey Chuck, can I add a +1 if we need a rental kayak? I know sometimes there's extra space for rentals even if the RSVP is closed...

    April 14, 2014

    • Chuck

Meghan - Add your plus one and it will probably kick you on to the waiting list. As your plus one is a rental I will move you back to the attending list. Renters and those who have paid their voluntary dues get priority on the waiting list in that order.

Hi Chuck, I will put a short sleeve wet suit on top of my long sleeve wet suit - hope this will good enough? Would love to join. If you think I need more gear, maybe I could borrow or buy. Please advise. Thanks, Christine
