Jumpstart Your Sea Kayaking

For those who have just recently started sea kayaking AND for those who haven’t done it, but want to try it out. This (approximately) three-hour introductory skills session is designed to give you the foundation skills that you need to make kayaking safe and fun.

We’ll cover proper technique for all the basic strokes, including forward, stopping, reverse, turning and moving sideways. We’ll also show you how to quickly get someone back in their boat if they should happen to fall out.

The training will include discussions about the kind of safety equipment you should carry, what to wear, and general safety issues. This class will definitely help you get off on the right foot in developing effective and efficient kayaking skills.

Don’t have a boat? No worries – rentals are available for an additional $20.00.  Request one when you RSVP

One of my original objectives when starting Chesapeake Kayak Adventures was to offer members high quality kayak instructional courses at very reasonable prices. I searched high and low for the best way to do just that last year and finally found it in the form of a kindred spirit by the name of Rick Wiebush.

Rick is from Catonsville and runs Cross Currents Sea Kayaking. He is an American Canoe Association (ACA) Open Water Instructor and an Instructor Trainer (i.e. he trains people who want to be certified as ACA instructors).

Rick has been paddling for about 12 years and has been an instructor for six years. He is known as having a pretty laid back, patient and humorous approach to teaching, and is very passionate about helping people ramp up their skills.

There is a 4 person minimum for the class to take place with a 12 person maximum. The $50.00 course fee must be paid by debit or credit card at the time you sign up. The courses will take place rain or shine except in the most inclement conditions. If your plans change and you are unable to attend, credit will be given toward future course offerings.

I had a great time at this sea kayaking course. I learned so much and felt very welcome and looked after. I would definitely recommend this course to anyone who is new to kayaking.

The weather forecast has continued to improve. There is now a ZERO percent chance of rain until at least 8:00 PM. If looks likes we should have a beautiful night for the class.

The weather forecast is IMPROVING dramatically as the day goes on. We are now down to a ZERO percent chance of rain at Daniels at the time we will be getting there. I will make another post at 3:00 PM regarding the weather but plan on the class being ON.

    Hi Chuck,
Looking forward to tomorrow evening. My nephew John Reid just joined. Do you have any room for one more for the jumpstart class tomorrow? He would need to rent.

We do have room for one more Robin. It appears that John is signed up for my event tonight (Monday). He and I can work out the details there or he can just email me if he is unable to attend tonight.

Just a heads up to those of you attending this course ... I will be sending out an email later this evening with all of the details you need to know for tomorrow night's class. It will probably be a little late as I'm trying to get the most accurate read I can on what to expect for tomorrow' weather.

Something came up and I find myself over-scheduled for Tuesday afternoon. I'll withdraw, so now you can add someone else if possible.

    Hi Chuck and Rick,
My kayak is a Dagger Blackwater, 12 feet long, which has a skeg but not a rudder. I don't have a cockpit skirt but might get one if available for this model. I'm comfortable paddling my open boat in lakes, tidal and Class I-II rapids. Is the course specifically about paddling safety and boat handling for coastal saltwater terrain? Would my present equipment be adaptable, or I suppose this could be an opportunity to try out a ocean kayak? Phones: mobile[masked]; home[masked]

Hey Bill - Your boat will be fine for the Jumpstart class and should allow you to participate completely in everything without additional equipment.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
