Intermediate Skills Series - June 26: Rescues: T-rescue, Heel Hook Re-entry, Paddle Float

These “a la carte” courses are designed for people who may have been paddling for a while, but have never had any formal instruction AND/OR for those who want to fine tune their skills.

We’ll focus on different skills each week and you can pick and choose which courses you want to take. You’ll come away from each session with better boat control skills, or better rescue strategies, and a lot more confidence.

Don’t have a boat? No worries – rentals are available for an additional $20.00.  Request one when you RSVP

Here's a list of all of the courses in the series.  This posting is ONLY for the course highlighted in bold.  Look at the other dates on the calendar to sign up for other courses.

·  May 15: More efficient forward, reverse and stern rudder strokes

·  May 22: Edging and turning strokes (edging, sweep, pivot, low brace turn)

·  May 29: Draw strokes (in-water recovery; sculling, draw on the move, side slip)

·  June 19: Bracing and sculling (support strokes)

·  June 26: Rescues: T-rescue: heel hook re-entry; paddle float

One of my original objectives when starting Chesapeake Kayak Adventures was to offer members high quality kayak instructional courses at very reasonable prices. I searched high and low for the best way to do just that last year and finally found it in the form of a kindred spirit by the name of Rick Wiebush.

Rick is from Catonsville and runs Cross Currents Sea Kayaking. He is an American Canoe Association (ACA) Open Water Instructor and an Instructor Trainer (i.e. he trains people who want to be certified as ACA instructors).

Rick has been paddling for about 12 years and has been an instructor for six years. He is known as having a pretty laid back, patient and humorous approach to teaching, and is very passionate about helping people ramp up their skills.

There is a 4 person minimum for the class to take place with a 12 person maximum. The $50.00 course fee must be paid by debit or credit card at the time you sign up. The courses will take place rain or shine except in the most inclement conditions. If your plans change and you are unable to attend, credit will be given toward future course offerings.

Thanks to Rick and Chuck for a great learning opportunity. The class was both informative and practical. Anyone planning on kayaking safely, need to learn these basic skills. Great class.

I just found the answer to my own question! DUH! I read the refund policy. I agree with it and have paid through paypal for this lesson.

Payments for missed classes can be applied to future classes so you shouldn't have paid Jane. I will issue a refund.

Hi I can't remember if I get a credit for the class I missed to apply to this or not.

Unfortunately, I won't be able to attend the class after all. I did not remember that I had already committed to another event on the same night.

I just tried to sign up for Thurs 6/26 - 1 spot left. The site kept refusing my credit card payment, tho. Please let me know if I can still get in and how to pay. Thanks.

Hey Terese - I'm not sure what the problem was but I just added you to the attending list manually. Plan on coming tomorrow night. Depending on why it wasn't letting you pay, it might now. Whatever the case we'll figure it out but please do plan on attending.

I am not going to be able to go as I don't get back from Boston in time. I don't think I have paid and not sure if I signed up or not. Just want to let you know. I'm sorrier than you are!

I will be there Thurs but this is my first time at Daniels Dam. Where do you park and where does the group meet? Any helpful directions?

    June 22

    • Chuck

Hey Vicky - I will send out an email the night before with all the details you need to know about things like parking and everything else.

We go a number of places that people have a tough time finding but Daniels is NOT one of them. Traffic on i-70 and Route 29 does get a bit backed up in the area close to daniels though so you may want to plan on it taking a little longer than you expect.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
