Blue Angels in Annapolis Paddle

Seeing the Blue Angels in Annapolis harbor is a wonderful treat – and seeing them from or by the water at close range can be a thrill. There are already other meet-ups that tie watching the air show to bike rides or restaurant outings. This meet-up will be for kayakers, but participant safety is important, and measures of caution will be observed. First, anyone who signs up should be comfortable in choppy water.  The harbor area will be busy with hundreds of active boats on the water – the perfect environment for big, confused waves. If you don’t like lumpy water, this won't be for you. Second, our group will be safest if its members stay together and move as a tight group, particularly when crossing thoroughfares such as the channel on the Severn. If that type of paddling cramps your style, then this won’t be for you.

Still interested?  Great!

Our plan will be to launch on Spa Creek at 10 in the morning, paddle into another creek or two along the Severn, then stop for a late lunch on the beach at Jonas Green Park. When the air show starts at 2, we’ll have the option of watching from that beach, or WALKING TO the east side of the Rt 450 bridge (with a view of the Naval Academy, across the Severn).

SCHEDULE:

Rendezvous at Truxton Park – about 9:30am

Launch /On the Water - by 10am

Paddle locally until about 1 or 1:30.

Lunch on beach - 1:30-2

Air Show – starts about 2pm

Return up Spa Creek to Truxton after the show.

Pack your camera, a lunch and water and – if you like – something snack-able to share with the group.

Dress appropriate for water temperatures – which may still be in the 50s.

It was a great day just seeing everyone and being on the water around Annapolis. The airshow was a fantastic bonus! I was a Naval Air Reservist during Viet Nam, so Naval aviation holds a special place for me. Thank you Chuck and everyone that helped!

Lisa, we love spending the day with you as well. Today turned out to be perfect; good food, exiting flying demonstrations, great people, and good food...oh, I said that already. Check out the video I made for you. Happy Birthday!

Slight complications here folks. Joans Green Park which is where we were going to stop for lunch is considered INSIDE the fly box and no one will be allowed in the park during the air show. We are considering alternatives that include everything from (A) paddling before the air show and then driving/walking to the Naval Academy grounds to watch the show to (B) finding another venue to land and watch the wire show from but there aren't man options for that, to (C) watching the show from the water as we did when the Blue Angels were in Baltimore. The last option makes eating lunch and having bathroom breaks a bit of a problem.

We will do something that ends up with a paddle and watching the air show but I'm just not sure which alternative is best right now. I will post the final decision and email it in my DETAILS email later tonight but that won't be until sometime after 10:00 PM as I have a class that I need to run off to now.

That would be possible Jean. I'm sorry I didn't see this until now and you have already dropped off

No problem just so happened that I needed to take of other things. Love looking at the photos though!

Plz text Chuck if you want to cancel.

With potential weather issues and all the other logistics issues, it sounds like it will be difficult to make a last minute plan that will work today.

    May 21

    • Chuck

I'm pretty sure it will work just fine Paul. But if you're uncertain I will totally understand

      May 21

  • Jean

Also have to cancel. Sorry for the last minute.

  • Patti

I'm going to pass on the paddle. I'm planning to find a place to park and walk in to watch the show. Looking forward to a little water time in the future!

Thanks, Patti for catching the closure earlier. New plans should be posted momentarily, so maybe you can join us for lunch, anyway.

  • Jane

Hi - hate to cancel at last minute. That has NOTHING to do with the memo below re alternatives. We have to be somewhere else that is a command performance. Sorry! Have a great time!

  • Patti

I was checking out the Jonas Green Park site and it states that it will be closed both days due to the BA flyovers. Not sure if that messes up your beach plans or not.

    May 20

    • Chuck

Patti - You just had to go and mess up the plan. Actually it's a good thing you did. I called AA County and Jonas Green is considered inside the fly box so it will indeed be closed. I had to talk to 3 people before I got a good understanding of what that means. It means no one in the park anywhere.

FYI. Paddle Planning Update: To fellow paddlers, if you read the Navy's event postings, you'll learn that they plan to prohibit boating on our stretch of the Severn River from 1:30 to 4pm, so we will be land-locked at Jonas Green Park during that time. We will re-launch for return up Spa Creek immediately after the air show.

    May 20

    • Chuck

We will be stopping for lunch and to watch the air show at Jonas Green Park where they even have porcelain that flushes. But as Dennis is saying, we will be stuck there from 1:30 to 4:00 as that section of the Severn will be closed to all boat traffic during that time frame.

      May 20

    • Jean

That sounds good. I have no problem with the time frame. Can't wait.

I will be getting my DETAILS email out late this evening between 10 and 11. I do think we can beat the smallish chance of rain in the forecast but will have a better perspective later tonight.

    May 20

  • Chuck

Don't let the rain in the forecast scare you too much. It should be partly sunny with temps in the high 60's with calm winds and ZERO chance of rain when we get on the water tomorrow. Around 1:00 PM that zero chance does change to a 40% chance of scattered thundershowers, but as you all know that also means a 60% chance of sunny blue skies. We paddle tomorrow rain or shine but you may want to bring a light waterproof jacket

Just a heads up since the weather looks iffy Wednesday: The BA rehearsal on Tuesday is usually almost as good as the live show, with less traffic from boats and cars. I am sure Chuck will charm (or bribe) the weather gods again...

    May 19

    • Chuck

I'm still planning on Wednesday. A 50% chance of "scattered" thunder showers is an easy bribe to the weather Gods

Chuck - Are you renting kayaks for this event?

    1 · April 30

    • Chuck

I have one reserved for you Paul

      May 1

  • Jennifer E.

Wow- what a GREAT meet up! Wish I could go. I'm working on getting a kayak still so I don't have to rent.
I just saw the Blue Angels in FL. Have a fun time; bring your ear plugs or hold your ears - protect your hearing.

  • Chuck

Just a heads up here folks. I expect power boat traffic and the resulting chop to be as bad as it ever gets in Annapolis the day of this paddle. If you don't have experience with that type of water it isn't going to be a good time or place to learn.

It will be more important than ever that we stay tightly grouped together for the entire paddle, but especially when crossing the boating channels.

I might compare it to trying to cross I-95 at rush hour on a bicycle.
