Laid Back Sunday Social Paddle - Triadelphia - Big Branch

  • May 11, 2014 · 10:30 AM
  • Triadelphia Reservoir - Big Branch

Laid Back Sunday Social Paddle from Big Branch Recreation Area on Triadelphia

Renters and those who have paid the voluntary dues receive priority on the wait list in that order.  Everyone has the same opportunity to sign up for the first 24 slots.

TO PADDLE AT TRIADELPHIA OR ROCKY GORGE RESERVOIRS YOU MUST PURCHASE A DAY USE PERMIT FOR $6.00 OR A SEASON PERMIT FOR $70.00. They can be purchased online at www.wsscwater.com or at the shack near Brighton Dam.  With 7 different kayak launch points between them we will paddle enough on Triadelphia and Rocky Gorge to more than pay for the season pass if you attend regularly.

We'll be on the water promptly at 10:30 AM from the boat ramp at the Big Branch Recreation Area .  Please plan to arrive with plenty of time to have your boat and gear ready to launch by then.  We do not wait for late arrivals.

This should be about an 7 to 8 mile paddle at a gentler pace.  We will stop off the water  for a lunch/snack break somewhere around the midpoint in the paddle so bring something to eat and perhaps something to share.  I expect we will be back to the takeout somewhere around 2:30 PM.

There are rental kayaks (including a paddle and PFD) available for this paddle at the weekend price of $45.00.  Please answer the rental question when you RSVP to request one.

    Hi you !
Is anyone driving out of DC metro area who could give me a ride? I could get to where you are by public transport or taxi AND would be happy to pay for all the fuel - still cheaper, but more importantly - more environmentally friendly than driving a rental car to get there. Please let me know! THX, C

Hi Chuck, looking forward to the paddle. One of my son's has RSVP for the event, and the other one is the +1 on my reservation. Together, we need 3 kayaks. What kind of payments do you take for the rentals? Also, are the permits per family or individual?

I had the three kayaks figured out Victoria. You should read the profile for your son that joined the group. :) I can send you a PayPal invoice for the rentals or you can bring cash to the paddle. Whatever works for you.

Weather Update and Other Details for Mother's Day:

I know a lot of Moms are looking forward to sharing their passion for paddling with their children on Sunday. I will send out my usual DETAILS email no later than Saturday evening but thought I might put some of you at ease about a few of those details now.

If you requested rental kayaks including paddles and PFD's when you RSVP'ed rest assured that there are plenty of boats and they will be waiting for you Sunday morning at the put in. If you didn't request a rental kayak when you RSVP'ed and want one, please email me ASAP

While the TV and radio station forecasts for Sunday are sounding a little bit "iffy", my read of the weather in the area immediately around Triadelphia Reservoir for Sunday is that we may have the best day of the year yet. With a high in the low 80's and winds out of the SW at 5 MPH under partly sunny skies, it should be beautiful. There is currently a very small chance of rain but it evaporates as the day goes on.

With lots of you bringing kids along, I suspect that we will have more than the usual number of less experienced paddlers so we will probably be moving a little bit slower than usual to make sure everyone can keep up. We will paddle out about 3.5 to 4 miles. That should take about 1.5 hours with a rest stop on the water. Then we sill stop for a lunch/snack break on a gravel bar along the river before doing the same return trip to the take out.

Pack a lunch or snack for you and your guests and bring plenty to drink to stay hydrated. Lot's of people like to bring something to share with the group on the Laid Back Social paddles. It adds to the festive air of the event during our lunch/snack break.

Try to avoid cotton clothing which takes forever to dry. Instead wear synthetic materials which dry quickly. This is kayaking and you are going to get at least a little bit wet even if there isn't a single drop of rain. Water shoes or shoes you don't mind getting wet are a great idea because you will have to step in the water getting in and out of the boat.

Mothers Day - just can't do it! We will be serving brunch to Moms and children (plus a few dads) at the shelter and then heading off to celebrate with my mom. Hope the weather is beautiful for all of us.
