Reviving the cancelled paddle and camp weekend to June 20-22, 2014

Camping and Kayaking on the Juniata River, Mifflintown, Pennsylvania.  Located between Harrisburg and State College, PA.  Rustic camping  on the river bank. Modern, clean bath houses. Rv and Trailer camping available too if you have one. Details on camping and livery fees to follow very soon. I have been camping and Kayaking here for a few seasons, about 20 weekends total. it is a very nice location and the owners are very friendly people. The river is great and best early in the season as it is higher and faster. I think you will love it.

The Juniata River … a slow-moving, peaceful body of water that wanders through the beautiful farmlands, dense woods, rolling ridges, and small towns of Juniata County. Saturday, we leave around 9 am and drive to the put in upstream and end at Buttonwood Campground. Sunday, we launch on the river from the campground and will be picked up down stream. For a true outdoor adventure, primitive camping on the banks of the Juniata River, where you may still enjoy our many nearby amenities. Shuttle service provided by the campground.

I thought it couldn't have been better weekend. The weather was cooperative, the paddle was good, but what made the weekend was the group of people. I hope everyone had a great one, I know Theresa and myself enjoyed it....
oh one last thing B9...ok anyone got bingo?

    June 23

    • Toni

Nope ;) I just needed O67. That one must have rolled under the table

Definitely a 5 star adventure! Beautiful river winding through the mountains, riverside tent sites, effortless (on our part) shuttling service arranged by Howard, made to order (by Howard) Sunday morning omelets, Saturday night party hosted by Mike and Theresa, and great people to share it all. Thank you esp. to Howard for setting it all up and to everyone else for making it so much fun.
Oh .... and not least important ...... all that and indoor plumbing too!

Thanks to "Smartie" for the hosting and the gourmet breakfast on Sunday. Meeting you all was what I had hoped it would be....fantastic.
Uuuhhh, I'm lousy at bingo because I came from a planet where they don't have it.....

    June 23

  • Theresa H.

Mike and I enjoyed everyone's company. But your all lousy bingo players you all did not get bingo sooner. Mike was getting tired of rolling the cage for numbers. Mike had to go take a nap because he was tired of rolling the cage LOL. But you all are great sports. It was nice meeting new people. Hope to see you all again.

Thank you Howard and Bob for hosting this event. It was a wonderful weekend. Thanks for all the cooking Bob, Nancy, and Howard. Thanks for your hospitality Laurie. Mike and Theresa, the Orange Crush party was fabulous. And thanks to everybody who came and shared everything too! It was indeed a delightful trip.

Spectacular. We had a great time. This was my first hosting experience and it was fun to do and see everyone enjoy it so much. Weather was great and the river was very full and very fast. We set a few speed records on each trip. Thanks to Bob Z and the "all the powerful Mermaid" for their assistance. Thanks to Mike and Theresa for hosting Orange Crush night. Great games and entertainment. Mike should be a cruise director. I met some new people and enjoyed being with CKA friends. There was plenty of good food for sharing. Thanks to all who prepared. My only regret was it had to end. Thanks to all for coming. Stay tuned for Buttonwood / Juniata 3 next spring. Sure to be a waiting list once the word gets out.

Hi folks, I got a call from home and I have to change course and head to KY. Sorry for the late bailout. Was headed to mifflintown and only an hour away, but family first.

  • Bob Z

Howard, are you the Anti-Weather GOD??!! Looks like the river was at 10+ feet Saturday and it's calling for Rain all week. Pictures on the Buttonwood Campground Facebook page.

    June 15

    • Mike C.

Howard looks like river levels down. Hopefully everything works for this weekend since the campground does not give refunds and ive already paid for tge weekend. Im the one with the rv site next to yours

In response to Bob ... a true Weather God can't truly strut his stuff with a perfect forecast. I mean last time Howard shook his right leg when I told him to shake his left and look what happened. Imagine what can be if he gets it right this time.

      June 17

  • kbkayaker

Oh no, Chuck! You seldom miss any paddle but TWO MIA's on the SAME TRIP?? I'm starting to think the local Mifflintown Sheriff has a warrant out for you.......what on earth did you do now?......
Please send shirts & stickers up with Howard, Kimmie or Bob Z.

    Thanks for the dance !!!!

Based on what I am looking at you guys should expect a 40% chance of "scattered" thundershowers on Saturday and a 30% chance of a "few" showers on Sunday with no major chances of rain between now and then. I have no experience with how the Juniata reacts to the smaller amounts of rain that should be expected but my guess is that the river will be at very acceptable levels for the weekend and you quite realistically have a 60 to 70 percent chance of sunny blue skies all weekend. I think you're set for a pretty good albeit not perfect weekend weather wise. I'm dancing for you.

  • Howard M.

5 to 6 feet is great for kayaking. The last few weekends we have been there that is where it was. We had one weekend earlier almost 7 feet.

    June 17

  • Howard M.

Lewiston is 20 miles up river from the campground and Newport about the same down stream. The locals in Mifflintown use Newport generally for readings

    June 17

  • kbkayaker

Is it the NOAA gage in Newport that you guys use for your readings in that region? Looks like they're predicting around 5-6 ft. through Friday......

    June 17

  • Howard M.

We need some kind of luck it seems. Water level was at 7 feet and falling last night and lower this morning. Let's hope it does not rain too much up there this week.

  • kbkayaker

Howard & Kimmie, thanks for jumping back on this so quickly. Yes the river will be busier but that's unavoidable. Do we have to whole riverfront tent area again?

    1 · June 12

    • Kimmie

No we have less people attending

      June 12

  • Mike C.

Hi..I believe us rvers have sites 331. 332. 333. My site is 332. Theresa and myself will be hosting orange crush nite on saturday starting 7pm. Bring your own nector drinking cup and snacks. Games and prizes as well. Hopefully weather will be more cooperative this time.

    June 12

  • kbkayaker

Barring another MONSOON event, I plan on arriving there 3-4pm on Friday. If anyone else is early, maybe we can stakeout an area as close as possible to your RV sites.
Do you "Luxe-Habitat-RVers" have the same sites as before near the ramp?

    June 12

  • Howard M.

NO. Maybe the portion closer to the RV's and the boat ram or if too full left and behind the ram up the hill a little. Won't know until we get there.

    June 12

  • Kimmie

Due the change of weekends, there are NO buttonwood campground rental boats available for Saturday. They do have some available for Sunday. If this an issue contact Kimmie. I can bring up some of chucks rentals if necessary.

    1 · June 4

  • Howard M.

As of June 4 we have only 14 people going on this camping weekend. Last time we attempted this trip I gave the campground a total of 30 people to reserve campsites. In fairness to them I should give them a final number by the end of this week so they can rent the extra sites. Hopefully more of you will join the fun. If you can please sign up soon.

Just found out that my dear friend Joyce is coming to town that weekend from Sedona. Sorry but "besties" take priority.

    1 · June 3

    • Kimmie

It is cool to have "besties". Mine was in last weekend! Have a blast!!!

      June 3

  • Mark M

Is it necessary or suggested I make a reservation with the Buttonwood folks to secure a tent site?

    June 3

    • Kimmie

No, Howard has reserved the tent camping area for us. We are all able to set up our tents and camp there. The only reservations necessary would be for RV sites.

      1 · June 3

  • Mike C.

Ok let's try this again. Theresa and I will host Saturday evening Orange Crush event, featuring adult beverage, games, and prizes. We have site 331 near boat launch this time, we have 35ft Silver Winnebago. Everyone to bring their own cups and any snacks you may want to munch on. Fun to start 7pm. Hope to see you then.

MIKE COPOLLA, BOB Z. AND I HAVE REBOOKED OUR RV SITES FOR THIS NEW DATE. 331, 332 AND 333. Pricing for rustic campers is $6 per night. Everyone should bring $25 cash to pay Howard for camping and livery on the weekend.
