Sunrise (sort of) Potomac River DC Monuments Paddle

  • Jun 29, 2014 · 7:00 AM
  • Potomac River - Columbia Island Marina Boat Ramp

Sunrise Potomac River DC Monuments Paddle

The total attendance limit for this event is 30 people but 6 spots have been reserved for individuals renting kayaks.  Renters on the waiting list will receive priority and be moved to the attending list until all 30 spots are filled.

This paddle is designed to give those attending a full day of events in DC. Be sure to sign up for the Legendary Crab Feast at the Washington Canoe Club after this paddle.  We'll start out the day with a leisurely paced relatively short paddle past the monuments as the Capitol wakes up for the day

While this paddle is not posted as a Laid Back Social Paddle, the distance and pace should allow newer paddlers to attend without too much difficulty.  I expect to be back to the take out no later than 12:45 so we will have time to arrive fashionably late at the Washington Canoe Club for the Legendary Crab Feast.

We will be on the water at 7:00 AM from the Columbia Island Marina for a paddle upstream with a view of the Lincoln, Jefferson and Washington Monuments from the river.  Please plan to arrive with plenty of time to have your boat and gear ready to launch promptly at 7:00 AM.  To keep to the schedule for the day we won't be waiting for late arrivals .. even if you get lost.  See the next paragraph.

Virtually every time we paddle from Columbia Island some one misses the paddle because they can't find the place.  Usually that's because they drive right by it but it is ONLY ACCESSABLE from the south bound lanes of the George Washington Memorial Parkway.  If you miss it going south bound you end up having to do a convoluted series of U-turns to get back to it.  Most GPS devices simply don't work well in the area so print out and study a map before leaving home.  What has seemed to work lately is searching for Columbia Island Marina with your GPS.

From Columbia Island we will cross the Potomac to paddle up the DC side past the Memorials and take a brief detour up Rock Creek where you can paddle into Lock and Dam #1 on the C&O Canal.  From there we will continue upstream to Roosevelt Island to stop for snack along the river.  Pack a snack and be sure to bring plenty to drink to stay hydrated.

I expect this paddle to be in the 6 mile range and we should be off the water sometime around 12:45ish

Rental boats are available for this paddle at a special weekend rate of $45.00 which includes the boat, paddle and a PFD waiting for you at the put in.  To reserve a rental boat just answer the rental questions when you RSVP.

Thanks everyone for having me and Rolly along. For my first group paddle it was great. Meeting everyone was a pleasure but remembering all the names will be a challenge. Looking forward to another.

See you all at the Wash Canoe Club after. I will be going there with family and I'd rather ride with them so that I may partake in the excellent beer choices that are offered with those crabs.
