Join Ralph on the 30 Mile Circumnavigation of Manhattan

Join Ralph on the 30 Mile Circumnavigation of Manhattan

I got an email from Ralph over the weekend indicating that he had decided to attend the 30 Mile Circumnavigation of Manhattan this year.  He thought it would be great if we could get some fellow CKA'ers to go with him.  Don't make Ralph have to paddle this one alone!

While I generally only post CKA sponsored events in our regular Meetup schedule, this one seemed worthy of the greater amount of publicity things get by being posted here.

The picture and details were borrowed from Yonkers Paddling and Rowing Club

DETAILS

The 2014 Manhattan Circumnavigation is sponsored by Yonkers Paddling and Rowing Club.  Co-sponsored by New York City Water Trail Association, Sebago Canoe Club and Inwood Canoe Club.  Insurance is provided by the American Canoe Association.

The event is open to all; club membership is not required; out-of-towners are welcomed. Kayakers can socialize, exercise, take pictures and explore during this 30 mile excursion. Careful planning means that the current helps rather than opposes the paddler. Safety of a large group is enhanced via general marine radio use; a safety boat escort and Coast Guard notification.

SCHEDULE

6:45–8:15AM        Arrive at Dyckman St Beach; Unload; Park

8:30AM sharp!     Launch; Paddle south on Hudson River

11:05–11:15AM       Cross Battery and head east and then north along east side of East River

1:15PM                    Arrive at Hallets Cove for lunch

2:45PM                  Launch from Hallets; Cross East River to west bank;

Head north on west side of Hell Gate

Continue north on the the Harlem River

5:30PM                  Arrive at Swindler Cove/Peter Sharpe Boathouse

6:45PM                 Return to Dyckman St beach

REGISTRATION AND FEES

All participants will pay an event fee of $25 to cover the cost of the cost of the safety boat and other event-related expenses.

Plus, ACA membership is required—either proof of annual membership or a $5 single day insurance.

This was an absolutely wonderful trip. It was great that so many MD/DC/VA people showed up, although I really didn't spend much time doing on-the-water socializing - I was too engrossed in the experience of my surroundings. Here is a link to our track: http://tinyurl.com/oqdgjeq It says we went 31.5 miles, although that includes me wandering around at a restroom break with my PFD on and GPS recording. Actual paddling was closer to 31 miles.

This was awesome! Well worth the drive. Special thanks to Ralph and Ben for sharing details and annotated, laminated maps. Maybe next year we can persuade Fearless Leader to join us.

This was such a great trip. It was good meeting a number of the CKA folks that were up there. Hopefully I will see you on the water again soon.

Great, that means now you can all come on the Nanjemoy paddle tomorrow. Actually I know some of you are still planning on going up tonight anyway. Enjoy your time in the city. But if anyone wants to come tomorrow I will find room for you even though RSVP's are closed

I'm thinking between the different groups we have maybe a total of 15 of you going from the Baltimore/Washington Area. I just want to wish all of you regardless of which group you signed up with a great and safe time on the water in New York. You make us proud just by going.

I have annotated two maps of Manhattan with notes about the circumnavigation. There are times, stops, distances, currents and hazards. All the information came from the email sent by the organizers to the participants. There is one map of Lower Manhattan and one of Upper Manhattan. Feel free to download them and print and laminate them if you would like. They are PNG picture files and are formatted to print on legal size paper. Here is the link to them: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/ewk06vgp7onkqur/AAC2sJGkDnBPZqY7RnzEET0da

I'd love to go but I think all the high rises and ships would intimidate the green tugboat. Anyone going have an extra sea kayak and rack and space in their car? Otherwise I'll just wait till next year. Hope everyone has fun!

I have an extra boat-the Eclipse (yellow & red) that I paddled on fossil hunt. You would want to try it first. High volume and a little tippy until you get the feel. Let me know if you are interested.

I hate to say I'm not going to be able to make it either, not for lack of a place to stay, but waited too long while trying to find out I can though is too late. Also have a large job assignment that starts July 30, so need the time for image processing.

If you haven't already registered, you should do so at the link posted. I spoke with one of the organizers yesterday who told me there is a wait list. Try to register or give him a call. Jerry Blackstone[masked] Mention that you are a CPA member if he says you are wait listed. Have a great time. I have to miss it this year. :-(

This is very tempting. I need to look at logistics before committing. It would be great if at least a few of us stayed together. Anyone interested?

I sooo want to go. The thing is, my GF is on a cruise right now with her daughter, just left today, and if I'm in Manhattan I'd be staying with her at her Wall St. apartment. That is, unless she has her daughter that weekend (since it's every other weekend and she had her the past weekend, I think that's not going to be a problem. Since the apt. isn't small, but it is a single bedroom, she ordinarily doesn't have any overnight guests when with her daughter). So, I may not know for another week, or possibly in a few days when they stop on an island & have regular texting service. At any rate, I have to wonder, does anyone know how late I can sign up? Is there a limit to the # of people? Or, if I sign up now and pay, is there any way to cancel and get that back or would I have to forfeit it?

I found a link about LAST YEARS paddle that has a more detailed itinerary than in the simple outline given for this year. The times are NOT correct and I don't know if the stops will be the same, but it is something that those of you that like to plan (Dennis) might find interesting. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1DMlJix-68C3fzWX4aFaFqqE28lx8SoKcU8adOBTeq5Q/edit

I thought I would share my travel plans. I will not be able to carpool, as my wife and daughter are accompanying me. I made reservations for Friday and Saturday at the Doubletree in Fort Lee, NJ - which is just on the NJ side of the GW Bridge. Google says it is 10 min. from the put-in, but I suspect it is really 30+ minutes. The hotel has a shuttle that runs regularly to mid-town Mahattan, so my wife and daughter can go into the city to shop, sight-see, or see a show while I am paddling. The rate I got was $122 per night. The plans or needs of others my vary, but this seemed to fit my needs.

We also have this posted on the Washington Kayak Club site, so if you're looking to share a ride to the Big Rotten Apple, check out our site too. Between our two clubs and CPA, we may have a dozen or more going.
