RESCHEDULED!
This meetup was originally scheduled for January 21st but got canceled due to weather so here it is again.
Billy Goat Trail Section A and Great Falls Overlook Hike
The National Park Service calls the Billy Goat Trail Section A "strenuous". Note the small blue stripe at the center of the picture to the left. That's actually a blue trail blaze indicating the path of the trail in the area pictured. This is one of the many memory makers and arguably the most technically difficult part of the trail.
For safety reasons this hike will be canceled if there is ice or snow on the ground. I normally wouldn't think of scheduling this hike at this time of year but with the warmer weather we've been having I've decided to give it a try. The bonus is that we will run into significantly fewer people than the several hundred we might meet on a warm summer Saturday.
Parking can get difficult in the Old Anglers area and you may end up having to park along the road and walk a little further to meetup with the group. We will meet at the bridge that crosses the C&O canal from the parking area to the towpath. Please be at the bridge ready to hike promptly at 10:00 AM. Pack a snack or a lunch to eat near the mid point of the hike. Total distance for this hike is a little over 6 miles. I expect we will be back to the parking area around 2:30 PM give or take a little.
Weather for Saturday is 50 degrees and sunny! It should be a great day to hike and sneakers are fine. Dogs are NOT allowed on Billy Goat Section A. A lot of people bring them anyway but in this case I really discourage it on Section A
Hey Toni, you're my hero! You get to cross this one off your list.
Hey guys, I uploaded the pictures from my blackberry. Sorry it took so long but I had to search for the software. When I zoomed in, the pictures are pixelated but you get the idea.
Becky and Kim - Thanks for the photos. They're great! You shouldn't have wimped out Gloria. :)
