The Miracle on 34th Street 6 mile Walk

Over the past 65 years the residents of 34th street in Baltimore's Hampden neighborhood have developed a reputation for putting up some of the most spectacular Christmas light displays in the United States.  Stealing a little bit of magic from the well known Christmas movie, it has become known as "The Miracle on 34th Street".  The residents and businesses in the area go significantly Christmas light crazy.  We did this walk last year and had a ball!  Come join us for a nice evening stroll and enjoy the lights.

We are borrowing again from the wonderful people at American Volksmarch and we will be following their 6mile route through the historic neighborhoods of Hampden and Roland Park to see the spectacular lights of 34th Street.  We will stop for dinner at one of the numerous interesting restaurants along "The Avenue" (36th Street) which include the infamous Cafe Hon although Cafe Hon does require reservations over the holidays so we probably won't be eating there.  If there a large group of us, we might break up into smaller groups like we did last year.  One group had Mexican, while the other group ate across the street.  Either way, we all had a great time!  We will meet in the parking lot BEHIND the Rotunda and set out from there.  We expect to be back to the cars around 10:30 PM, give or take a little.

Thanks everybody, it was a magical evening! As usual, Chuck provided beautiful weather. It only got cold and windy after we got back to the cars! But thanks to Larry and his warm cider, we didn't feel the cold.

I would really like to go to this, except I have a holiday party 'til 6pm in Crofton. I'm also coming from the Annap area and was wondering if anyone else is going at a later time and would like to carpool? Would be available to meet after 6pm.

will wait til last minute. see how icy the world is. Ice and a cane do not mix too well. may just try and find you all and see where you will eat. sherry

The current forecast (8:00 AM) has the chance of precipitation at 20% by the time the walk starts and dropping to 0% during the walk. Based on that I really don't think we'll have a problem with rain but a waterproof jacket is probably a good idea. I will be there whatever happens and we will be walking as long as it isn't a downpour. Weather forecasts get amazingly accurate when they're only 12 hours in the future.

Hi Yoshiko, I'd be happy to carpool with you. Let's meet in the Harbor Center in Annapolis, maybe near Barnes and Noble parking about 4:30, that should give us time to get there with ease. I will drive- no nerves here and got a new car yesterday! Also, there is a very lively , upbeat jazz group I was introduced to in Annapolis that is playing a long set starting at 9:30 at the Waterfront Kitchen in Baltimore. I would be interested in going if you and anyone else might like to tack it on to the evening for an hour. i have never been to the Waterfront Kitchen but just googled it- looks like a wine bar with organic food. I can provide more details if there is a positive response. Should we exchange phone numbers? Dawn
