The Wednesday Night Paddler (TWNP) Daniels

  • April 3, 2013 · 6:00 PM
  • Patapsco River - Daniels Dam

I am making this paddle Cold Water Attire Strongly Encouraged but not required.  If you have the right gear, please wear it.  I expect water temps to hit the 50 degree mark for this paddle but that is still dangerously cold.  On this section of the Patapsco, water less than knee deep is never more than a couple of steps away so you can usually stand up and immediately be out of the cold water but you're still going to be wet and very cold.  If you don't have Cold Water Attire please bring dry clothes to change into in case you do get wet.  Wear synthetic fabrics and avoid cotton at all costs.  Even if is is warm when we launch it’s going to get chilly as the sun goes down.

Our  now world famous regular Wednesday Night Paddles will begin for the season on Wednesday, April 3, 2013 at 6:00 PM.  The time is the "on the water time".  Please plan to arrive early enough to have your boat and gear ready to paddle promptly at 6:00 PM.  We DO NOT wait for people on Wednesday Nights because of limited daylight hours.

We'll be returning to the Patapsco River at Daniels Dam for the first TWNP of the season and then switching to various other locations mostly in Howard County, MD or nearby every Wednesday Night through early October.  Sunset on April 3th, 2013 will be around 7:30 PM which should give us the time to get up stream to the swimming hole for a few minutes of socialization before heading back to Daniels.

The Wednesday Night Paddler (TWNP) is a chance for everyone to paddle off the work day stress while working on paddling technique and staying in shape.  Of course it becomes quite a social event too.  TWNP is an opportunity for everyone regardless of boat type or skill level to paddle in the safety and camaraderie of a group as long as you have access to a boat, PFD and paddle.  I'll post more details as we get closer to April.

There will be rental kayaks (including a paddle and PFD) available for this paddle at the Wednesday Night price of $25.00.  If you require one please indicate that by answering the rental question when you RSVP.

If a paddle at Daniels Dam is ever scheduled again in warmer weather I'd be all over the idea. My parents got married in, and as a child I attended, the little white church that is now in ruins just below the damn. I'm a new paddler that has only done this 3 times so I didn't want to try this one in these temps ;)

Nancy - We go there frequently on Wednesday nights. At least once if not twice a month. It is one of our favorite Wednesday destinations.

It was a lovely evening in every way. It was an evening of contrasts that made it all the more special. It was brisk and crisp but the warm familiarity of old friends, hot chocolate and the river itself was comforting. The old familiarity was contrasted with the excitement of gaining wonderful new friends, new unfamiliar aspects of the river and the promise of spring (still struggling to emerge). It was inspiring to see the emergence of those who experienced challenges in the fall and winter but are forging ahead in anticipation of warmer and brighter days ahead. The river is such a wonderful metaphor for life, ever-changing but also so familiar. I continue to feel so extraordinarily lucky and grateful to have the opportunity to share it with such special and resilient friends! Thank you so much to our capable event hosts, Chuck our fearless leader, of course, but also, thanks to the watchful eye of Kimmie who oversaw our launch and Ben and Bob Z who kept us safe along the way!

With the wind blowing down the river valley it was a bit of a cold evening but everyone's excitement at seeing old friends kept us all warm. Kinda makes me wanna get mushy and say I love you all. I dunno if I can go that far but I'm really happy I let you all back into the group. :) Thanks for coming everyone. It was a great night

Amazing how an area you paddled so much last season can feel so "new" to you again. Great time, with the CKA regulars and a few newbees too. Can we do a little better on the cold temps next time though? ;)

It was a little 'chilly' - a bit 'breezy' - but getting out on the water with some of my favorite people on a Wednesday night makes it 5 stars all the way.

So good to see everyone after a long winter! A bit of a challenge paddling upstream against current and wind in my pyranha, but loved the rewards - beverages a la Chuck and delicious ladyfingers. I also learned the right way to make hot chocolate. Can't wait for the next paddle. Thanks, Chuck!

It was cool. It was clear. It was fast. It was dark. It was congenial.
    It was another perfect paddle.

    • Chuck

Katie - I'm sending you my phone number by email. The easiest way to answer all of your questions is by phone. Please try to call me sometime today if you can. You should have gotten an email with lengthy details about tonight.

well Katie - YES (just about.) we all help one another unload our kayaks. we all bring goodies to share at the half-way point and socialize, and then we help one another load our kayaks back on our cars. It's a lot of FUN :-D

Hi All...i need to give up my spot tomorrow night. I do not have the proper cold weather gear for the cold water. Suggestion for me for the future would be great. I have really only paddled when it has been warm enough so you don't get hypothermia!

    April 2, 2013

    • Chuck

Hey Jeni - Sorry you can't make it. The cold water gear isn't terribly expensive but by the time you get a wetsuit, booties and gloves you're probably looking at $200. I am hoping that we will only have cold water gear requirements for a couple more weeks. You might just want to wait it out at this point and look at getting cold water stuff in the fall if you want to keep paddling then. If you really want to go ahead with it now just send me an email or give me a call for details. You should have both my email and phone number from the email I sent yesterday

I need to rent a boat

    March 29, 2013

    • Chuck

Got you covered Jane. Just for newbies ... the easiest and best way to tell me you want a rental boat is to answer the rental question when you RSVP. You can pay cash the day of the paddle or I can send you a PayPal invoice but I will need your email address for that and Meetup doesn't give them to me.

DAG NAB IT, I THOUGHT THIS WAS FOR THE 26TH

    March 26, 2013

  • Rose C.

Hi Laurie, I can answer that question for you. You will have to wear your PFD and your cold water gear. I always try to get out of that one but it is always a no go. Right Chuck?

    March 22, 2013

    • Chuck

Rose - In an unusually kind and benevolent gesture towards you on my part, I'm not going to say anything. You can thank me the next time you see me. :)

Yay, I made it in :) Sorry someone had to drop out.. but.. Yay!!! I'm in!!!

As we head back into the paddling season I need to remind everyone that our paddles are limited in attendance for a number of reasons including safety and logistics. As a result virtually all of our paddles last year had waiting lists with people hoping that a spot to attend would become available. If you sign up for a limited attendance paddle and cancel at the last minute or just don't show up you are preventing someone else from attending. We don't take that sort of behavior kindly. If you sign up for a limited attendance paddle, please make the committment to show up or change your RSVP a couple days before the paddle. Please note that failure to show up for a limited attendance paddle will get your privilege to attend future paddles temporarily suspended. Habitual violators will be removed from the group. If you sign up, please show up.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
