Chris Moyer ( the other Chris) was kind enough to do some research and find this book for our 3rd Anniversary Meetup.

In a sparkling debut, A Discovery of Witches became the "it" book of early 2011, bringing Deborah Harkness into the spotlight and galvanizing fans around the world. In this tale of passion and obsession, Diana Bishop, a young scholar and the descendant of witches, discovers a long-lost and enchanted alchemical manuscript deep in Oxford's Bodleian Library. Its reappearance summons a fantastical underworld, which she navigates with her leading man, vampire geneticist Matthew Clairmont. Harkness has created a universe to rival those of Anne Rice, Diana Gabaldon, and Elizabeth Kostova, and she adds a scholar's depth to this riveting story of magic and suspense. And the story continues in Book Two, Shadow of Night.

Clever premise and plot twists, but short on character development and long on words.

I should be able to get there by 12:30 on Sunday as long as we have enough people. I am almost finished with the book!

I finished the book and iit was just ok. Many parts could have been cut in half. I almost gave up numerous times. I don't care if the author is a wine expert etc. Too much attention to things that don't matter

I am still planning on attending unless the storm on Saturday is 2 ft or more and the snow plows don't plow on Saturday.

Its written wonderfully. I can smell the cloves and the lead 'witch' is very likable. Another Vampire out in the sun. Good thing Abe Lincoln explained how that works to us.

Anyone else think this book drags?

    January 13, 2014

    • Chris M.

It does have it's moments, but the author is a history professor and a wine blogger, so I can see her attention to details coming through.
