Let's make a plan!

The line between reality and fantasy is extremely blurry these days.  We are making robots, printing body parts, sculpting on the computer, finding new quantum particles that are part of the building blocks of our universe and on and on. Sounds like Sci-fi.  Who wants in?  Lets talk about how we can harness some of this stuff and bring dreams to life.

It looks like yesterday was amazing! Thanks for posting the pictures Steve. I'm so sorry I had to miss the first meetup. I cant wait for the next event - looking forward to the 3D Printing. I have my own Makerbot here at home, what printer will you be using? I recently created a 3D Printing and Modeling Certificate at the College of DuPage because of the community demand out here in the burbs, and would love to see a larger community grow here in Illinois:) At our recent open house, the turnout was incredible, from hobbyists, fine artists, jewelry designers and more....the vibe is so wonderful and the ideas out of the world...its energizing.

Thank you for hosting, and bringing together such an interesting group in a gorgeous facility. I think we will find lots of adventures and learning together. It was definitely a good immersion for me.

Awesome first meet up! I just wanted to thank everyone for coming out. It was really great to meet you all. Everyone is really coming from a unique perspective! It's a crazy mashup! Also wanted to thank Chris Tedin for a cool walk through of Houdini! Please post up any idea that you have for upcoming meetings. I will do my best to pull it together. You can just reply to this thread.

    So far I have:
    1) lets go to maker space.
    2) Field trip to Fermi lab
    3) Guest speakers
    - 3D guys Aaron Beck and Greg Broadmore from Weta
    - 3D printing artist
    4) 1 web meetup between meetings (this would a quick 1 hr tutorial from one of our members or a guest) Also, for everyone that mentioned interesting ideas or thoughts, I'm going to start another thread in a minute. Feel free to post up any additional info!

Thanks again for a great evening in OP!!!

If it's okay, I can show some cool Houdini tricks. Flame, fluid, particles, even procedural modeling. You can make assets and put them into maya, unity, and soon cinema 4d and unreal. The upcoming indie version should be great for small studios.

Hello all. I was looking forward to meeting everyone - Chris especially, its been years since I've seen you. You were my teacher back at schaumburg:). I got the call to sub tonight, so I won't be able to make this time, but I am looking forward to the next meetup.

    Hello Steve,
My interest is still strong. However when first
mentioned I was back in town. I now journey between Chicago and Las Vegas somewhat regularly so my change is due to my physical absence. If I can be of help, please ask. As indicated in prior emails I saw this evolve from its conception days, back when rapid prototyping begot additive
    manufacturing circa 1986 in Michigan.
My best advice in pursuing this discipline is to read extensively, sign up for the 3 D ezine (free) and continue to research all avenues in all markets where you will discover its presence, influence and reality. Like nano technology, this is very much the
future personified in so many ways and proven daily by its expanding applications and practical uses.

Perhaps the next trip back home will time out better and I will be able to attend your next get together.

Sorry I can't make your inaugural meeting, but I am sure there will be many more to follow.

    Be well.

    Terry

Sorry about that folks. Got a little swamped. We are still on. The first meeting for Thursday August 28th, 6:30 at Pleasant home in OP. I'm hoping to have a quest lecturer from Weta! Still waiting for confirmation. Either way this should be a good kick off.

Chris! Thanks for reaching out. Unfortunately both Weta Artists - Aaron Beck and Greg Broadmore have asked if they can be in future meetings. It would be awesome for you to share some of the most powerful tools out there!

This is our first time getting together so charting where we're going will be key for this meeting.

Steve, you had mentioned you were working on getting some guest a speaker(s). Have you had any luck? If so, who will be quest speaking?

I will be out of town for this meetup but I definitely am interested in bringing 3D printing to Oak Park. I belong to Pumping Station One on the northside and have been talking to other creatives about creating a makerspace in Oak Park. I return on September 2.

    I'm there.

Hope everyone is well. Please let me know if you are coming to our meeting on Thursday the 28th. I'm going to bring a few refreshments and want to make sure that I bring the appropriate amount. Thanks!

? of the evening ---- Humans and AI. Do we need to set the rules of fair play now? The 3 laws of robotics are really sweet but archaic in the face of innovation without consideration of human participation and well being.

If you haven't seen Dawn of the Planet of the Apes you should definitely check it out. Weta and Andy Serkis are at it again and the results are stunning. Mo Cap is on our agenda by the way! It sits right next to Haptics in a section of my heart.

Excited about joining a knowledgeable group that
recognizes the value of 3 D Print and the paradigm shift it represents in manufacturing.FYI I started this journey years ago but last year stepped forward to participate. Will share my background experiences
and research to help things move along more quickly.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
