Training Hike- 5 to 8 mile day-hike in the Palos area (SW of Chicago)

  • Mar 24, 2013 · 9:00 AM

Finally, the first weekend of spring!

Want to get some training for your next big backpacking trip? Or just want try out hiking with a backpack before signing up for a boot camp? This is the trip for you!

We will hike a short loop in the Palos Forest Preserve area. This trail will be more flat than our typical backpacking trip. However, we will hike with full packs, so this is a good first trip with the club and/or first trip of of the season.

Who can participate: the hike is open to anyone with or without prior backpacking experience. However, you are expected to carry a backpack that you might usually bring for an overnight trip. For new backpackers, this is a great way to practice with a full pack in preparation for future overnight trips.

If you want to learn more about the club, or about backpacking, we would be happy to answer any questions while we're on the trail. We welcome new members or those new to backpacking.

The route: The exact route will be announced to confirmed participants, but plan on a 5-8 mile hike. We should finish by 1 PM.

We will arrive at the trailhead by 9am. Driving instructions will be provided next week, and we will help arrange car pools for those who need a ride. You will be asked a few basic questions when you RSVP, and we will follow up with an email by Thursday of next week.

Feel free to bring a lunch. Those who are interested can organize a post-hike lunch, but we are not planning anything officially.

The meetup fee for this trip is $2 with no refund.

Please contact one of us if you have questions.

Thanks to the organizers for coordinating. A great training experience - lots of mud, sore muscles and even some navigation skills put to good use that got us back on route. Just goes to show that it helps to have a map and compass, even on a well marked suburban trail.

This was a great event for me. It really helped me zero in on some issues with my pack. I also got some great information from the organizers and participants. I am looking forward to the upcoming bootcamp

    Hi,
We've limited the number of sign-ups to reduce crowding and impact on the trail. Keep an eye on the site for future training hikes.

Just emailed car pool assignments to people in the city. Tons of suburbanites in the west/southwest suburbs. Let me know if you may want to pair up with someone to drive.

Hi There. Turns out I can't make it but also because I have carried a pack on a multi-day trip before thought it good to open my spot for someone who is trying it for the first time!

I emailed everyone who's confirmed for the hike with the directions and some additional information. Let me know if you didn't get it. If you can't make the hike, please change your RSVP to open a spot for the meeting list.

I've only occasionally backpacked through the years. Never had anyone to go with. I'm looking forward to my first meetup with this group.
