This is an intermediate trip combining backpacking and canoe/kayaking along the scenic Manistee River Trail.

Please read the following information carefully before signing up.

Download the U.S. Forest Service Map below.

Friday: Car camp at Red Bridge campground located at N. Coates Hwy, Herrietta, Michigan. Tent space may be limited, be prepared to huddle.

Saturday: Hike approximately 11 miles along the Manistee River Trail, from Red Bridge to Seaton Creek Campground.

Sunday: Hike approximately 2 miles to Consumers Power Canoe Portage at Hodenpyl Dam to pick up our boats and begin a gentle 4-hour paddle, ending back at Red Bridge where our cars are parked. The rental shop will transport our backpacks to the livery, a short drive from Red Bridge. After picking up our gear we’ll grab lunch on the way back to Chicago.

- Canoe: $18.50/person
- Kayak: $37/person
- Meetup fee: $5/person
- Seaton Creek Campground fee: $1/person

$20 RSVP fee via PayPal. This fee is applies to the $5 Meetup fee, $10 boat deposit, and boat transportation fee (may be waived or discounted). No refunds will be given - please be sure you can attend before committing to this trip.

You will need to bring cash to the trip to pay for the remaining rental/camp fees. The exact amount will depend on whether you choose a canoe or a kayak and the final boat transporting fees (tbd). We will let you know your total cost before the trip.

When you RSVP, you will be asked if you prefer to operate a single-person kayak or to share a canoe. The single-person kayaks are open kayaks, no experience is required. We will do our best to accommodate your preference, but reserve the right to make the final arrangements.

This is an Intermediate level trip. Participants should have attended a bootcamp or have sufficient backpacking experience. Contact an Organizer if you have a question regarding your readiness.

All participants are responsible for obtaining the essential equipment for the trip and having the knowledge to use the equipment (shelter, backpack, gear, etc).

Backpacking can be a strenuous cardiovascular exercise. Participants should be in reasonably good health and physical fitness.

August can bring hot/humid weather and buggy conditions, so plan accordingly. Beware of poison ivy. Stay hydrated! Don't forget any medications, prescription eyewear, sunscreen, etc.

Meals are not planned. Bring your own food.

Organizers will do their best to ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable time; however, you are ultimately responsible for your own comfort.

We practice Leave No Trace outdoor ethics ( and expect the same from all participants.

Carpools will be arranged 7-10 days before the trip.

Only group members may attend. +1 add-ons are not permitted. If you have a friend that wishes to attend, please have him or her join the group and add him/herself to the list.

I looked at the map. As long as the streams are flowing, there are numerous crossings along the trail, with the longest section between them being ~3.5 miles towards the end. I'm going to call a ranger station this week and try to get more info, which I'll post here!

When will we hear more details about the paddling Sunday?

    Hi Steffi,
Spencer and I have not heard from you about the carpool form. I have sent you an individualized email with the form link. Please take a min to fill it out. The deadline to fill out the form is Friday, August 16th at 5pm. If we do not hear from you by the deadline, then we will assume you are no longer able to go and will drop you from the trip. We don't want to do that, so please fill out the carpool form. Thanks.
