Land Between The Lakes (Kentucky)

This is a longer Intermediate weekend trip to the Land Between the Lakes area in Kentucky. Participants should be able to leave by noon on Friday in order to make the 7+ hour drive to the area. Please note that this is not over Labor Day weekend, it's the following weekend.

The terrain should be relatively gentle with some rolling hills and the mileage plan is conservative-moderate. We plan to do 3-6 miles on Friday depending on arrival times, 10ish on Saturday, and approx 6 on Sunday. There will be a car shuttle.

Cost: $5 meetup fee (non-refundable)

Permit fees will be split and collected on site. We expect it to be $7 per person. Please bring cash.

Gas/any tolls are the responsibility of individual car pool.

No beginners, please. You should have successfully completed the full mileage of a bootcamp or have other backpacking experience. If you're new to the club, please send an email to the organizers explaining your background before signing up for the trip.

The role of organizers

Organizers are responsible for trip planning and organizing carpools. We have researched the route and made campsite decisions. We will also email participants to collect carpool information about 10 days prior to the trip. Be sure to check email and respond promptly. Those who fail to respond will be dropped from the trip.

Expectations of participants

Backpacking can be a strenuous cardiovascular exercise. Participants should be in reasonably good health and physical fitness.

All participants are responsible for obtaining the essential gear for the trip.

Organizers will do their best to ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable time, however you are ultimately responsible for your own comfort. Remember that September in Kentucky can bring hot/humid weather or cooler nights, so plan accordingly. Also, don't forget any medications, prescription eyewear, etc. Let an Organizer know if you have any special requirements.

Please contact an Organizer if you have any questions!

See you on the trail,

Sonja and Doug

I assume there will be running water, yes? If so, I'll bring my new gravity filter and go light on water. Also, any idea what the bugs will be like?

The lbl.org website recommends 'tick repellant', don't know if that's different than regular bug repellant. A friend of mine also warned against ticks so I thought I'd do the long pants despite the heat.

I plan on prepping for bugs. The ticks have been bad this year. Long pants are a good idea. I'll bring deet for myself, but that works better on mosquitos than ticks. If you're worried about ticks, spraying your clothes with permethrin can really help. If you plan on using permethrin (available at REI), you'll need to get it ahead of time and allow time for the clothing to dry completely before wearing it. Also, you'll want to apply it outside (and it's toxic to cats - so that may make many people wary of using it).

Hi Jim. Sorry the links are not working for you. Are you getting a specific error or is it just timing out on you?

For those of you who have RSVPd and are on the Waitlist for the trip, I have sent out the carpool information form for you to fill out. The deadline to fill out the form is Friday, August 30th at 5pm. As we need hikers, we will start at the top of the list and work our way down depending on when you signed up on the waitlist group. Please fill it out and get the information back to us. Thanks.

For those of you who have RSVPd YES on the trip, I have sent out the carpool information form for you to fill out. The deadline to fill out the form is Friday, August 30th at 5pm. Please fill it out and get the information back to us. Thanks.

    Hi Christopher,
Thanks for your interest in the trip. For our group and trip, we ask that hikers sign up for them using the RSVP function to show there interest. Since we have reached the yes capacity for this trip, we encourage hikers who would still like to go if spots open up to get on the waiting list. So if you are still interested in going, please sign up on the waiting list and as spots open up, Sonja and I will go down the waiting list looking for hikers who can still go. Let us know if you have any questions. Thanks.

Hello. I'm a fairly experienced hiker and backpacker, and to attend I would need to carpool from Chicago. Anyone want a gas assisting passenger?

    August 15, 2013

  • Sonja

    Hi everyone,
If you're new to the group and haven't attended a bootcamp, please send an email to me or Doug letting us know your experience. If I met you at the meetup last night and you don't have a profile pic up, send me a quick email letting me know who you are so I can match names and faces/experience.
    Thanks!

Hi Stacy, you can always send me a message through here. Hope you can make it, but if you can't, then please change your r.s.v.p. when you know. Thanks!

I always wanted to see the Land O'Lakes!

    August 14, 2013

    Hi Rachael,
For trips like these the organizers will create a car pool list of those attending about a week or two before the event so everyone has a ride to the location. Hope this answers your question.

    August 14, 2013

  • Rachael

Is it possible to commute with someone to these events?

    August 14, 2013

  • 蒋杰

That place looked so cool! I wish I take the bootcamp already... I guess I have to wait until the next time. :(

I love this idea and would love to go. New job and can not pull off the time off part yet.
