Charles Deam Wilderness-cold weather (Int to Adv)

This will be an Intermediate to Advanced level trip to Charles Deam Wilderness just south of Bloomington Indiana.

Rough Itinerary
Friday: Drive down (after work) and do around 3 miles of night hiking into a campsite.
Saturday: Hike approximately 10 miles to our Saturday night site.
Sunday: Hike approximately 6 miles back to the cars, stop in Bloomington for lunch and head home.

It is very important to understand that winter camping involves serious risks and requires special gear. This trip is open to anyone who has completed a bootcamp or has significant prior backpacking experience; especially in cold weather. Average lows for this area in the first week of December are below freezing. You should be very comfortable with your skills and your ability to hike. Attendance is at the discretion of the organizers. Also, please note that this trip might have to be canceled at the last minute if weather and/or road conditions become hazardous.

Another note of caution: Saturday, December 7th is the start of muzzleloading deer season in Indiana. While not as dangerous as the shotgun season, all participants will be required to have and wear at least one major article of clothing that is blaze orange (do not wear white).

Guidelines
◦ We practice Leave No Trace and expect that everyone attending is also committed to these principles. http://lnt.org/
◦ This is an intermediate to advanced trip due to the rugged terrain, short daylight hours, and potential for cold weather.
◦ No add-ons. If your friend wants to attend, please ask him/her to sign up for the meetup site and join the trip through normal procedures.
◦ No pets, children, or other dependents.

Getting there
Organizers will make the car pool arrangements, within reason, so that everyone may attend. They will plan the route of the trip, coordinate any needed logistics, and facilitate any details of the trip related to requirements of the park location. Details on carpool arrangements, directions and contact information will be determined about a week before the trip. Cost is $5.00 per person payable at the time of sign up.

Great trip!! Thanks Sonja and Chris for setting this up. And also for the added wintery snow effects. First in snow shoes and it was good. Happy Trails!

Thanks for everyone for being such a great company.
And thanks for God for a snow storm. Could we get such stuff more often, please?

A Winter Storm Warning for heavy snow means severe winter weather conditions are expected or occurring. Significant amounts of snow are forecast that will make travel dangerous. Only Travel in an emergency. If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight. Food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.

    Hi guys,
I'll be dragging my 3-person tent, so if anyone would like become "tentmate" and travel light - you are welcome. Just let me know.
    See you on Friday ;)

    • Giedrius

Sure, Billy. Will leave you heavier half :)

I am sorry but I have to cancel my participation. I was hoping to make it but the chances are low and I don't want to mess up the carpool. Have fun

    Hi Sonja,
I am no longer able to attend this weekend and am unable to change my RSVP to remove me from the waiting list. It sounds like a wonderful trip and I hope to attend if another is scheduled. Thank you!

sorry, can not make it, need to work late Friday for deadline. I hope enough time for someone else to join. BTW, the email on carpooling is not working.

    Hi,
I just sent out the carpool survey. Please check your email and respond ASAP. Let me know if you didn't get it. I sent it out on Monday, but no one has responded and Chris said he didn't get his, so I think there was an error with meetup (even though I got copies of the emails that were "sent".) Thanks!

    HI guys,
I just got a sprained ankle and I don't think I will recover for the camp. I am in the waiting list but will change my RSVP to no.
    Enjoy
