Winter Overnight Trip

This is a one-night intermediate trip to Lapham Peak near Milwaukee. Lapham Peak has some gently rolling hills and wooded terrain. http://dnr.wi.gov/topic/parks/name/lapham/

WHO CAN ATTEND
Participants should have some backpacking experience - at least a bootcamp or equivalent experience. You should be prepared for temperatures to get down to 0F overnight and be able to hike a few miles carrying all of your winter gear.  Organizers will strive to ensure participant enjoyment; however, you are ultimately responsible for your own comfort and safety. If you have any questions about winter gear/your gear, please email the organizers.

ITINERARY
We'll leave Chicago around 11 am (getting us to the park around 1pm), we'll hike a few miles (no more than 3, possibly less) into camp from the cars, and camp in the Lapham Peak backcountry site. On Sunday, we'll head into town for a group breakfast before driving back to Chicago.

Lapham Peak hosts a candlelight cross-country ski and hike Saturday evening. If there's interest, we can walk up from the campsite to participate.

COSTS
Meetup fee: $5 at time of RSVP
Camping fee: $2/person - bring cash
gas/tolls/park sticker ($10 unless you have an annual pass) should be arranged/split with your carpool. Individual carpools work out payment arrangement.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Organizers will make the carpool arrangements about 7-10 days before the trip.

No add-ons. If your friend wants to attend, please ask him/her to sign up for the Meetup site and join the trip through normal procedures.

No pets, children, or other dependents

If the trip is full, please sign up for “want a spot”

We practice Leave No Trace outdoor ethics (www.lnt.org) and expect the same from all participants.

Great attitude, preparation and participation from everyone! Scenery straight off a holiday card. Loved spirit of ingenuity and experimentation.

Perfectly planned for the weather, for learning, and for fun. Strong leadership, most enjoyable and helpful 9 partners in crime, and delicious, thoughtfully timed hot beverages! Watching kids play on the frozen lake, warming up at the bonfire, and feeding the spirit with the Candlelight hike and sparkling snow was what it was all about. (Ok, so we cheated to use them warming house bathrooms..) I love how all the events I have attended have ended perfectly at good brewpubs. Awfully glad Spencer's car started on its own!

Will we be making a fire at our campsite, or are we just using our stoves? Also, is anyone else going to snowshoe? I'm geeked up to use mine. Woohoo! Let's do this!

    • Sonja

We will have a fire, but it's a good idea to bring stoves and see how well they do (or don't!) work. I'll be brining a small pot to melt snow in the fire. We also plan on doing mulled wine over the fire Sat night (I'm brining enough to share).

      Yum! Thanks!

Wind chill values are predicted to be below 0 tomorrow night. Make sure to bring something to cover your face and extra gloves (always a good idea in winter).
If your bag is rated close to 0, you might want to think about bringing a second bag to layer or extra blanket.

I have an extra down bag if anyone wants to borrow it. It's 15F men's long. And I have an extra liner. Lemme know through here, or my number's in the car pool form.

We're keeping our eyes on the weather and will discuss if we want to move the trip or cancel if we keep getting these very cold spells. Temps in the teens are one things, negative temps before windchill can be downright dangerous.

Agreed. Though I'll be disappointed. We should have a sleepover instead! Games, drinks, rising marshmallows over the gas burner...

Rescheduled is unlikely for me since I can't do the next couple weekends and I'm hoping we'll run out of winter eventually :-) Can't do an intro to winter trip in Spring - I hope! But, like Mary says above, we'll try to come up with an option to get people outdoors to experience a "normal" winter safely.

Moving the trip south to Sand Ridge (near Peoria) is a reasonable option. Temps are forecast to be a bit more friendly there for that weekend. We'll likely have to decide kind of last minute, though. Sorry for the lack of definite info-hope everyone can stay flexible.

Will you guys be doing more overnight trips like this or is this the only one?

    January 12

    • Sonja

Do you mean any one-night trips or winter specifically? The bootcamps will start back up when it gets warm. Hopefully there won't be much winter left after this trip.

      1 · January 12

    • Brian W

Both. I definitely want to do some of these one-night trips when my work schedule allows. The winter ones sound fun too :)
