Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument is the largest park in the Southwest, yet its spectacular scenery is some of the least visited. The variety of formations are astounding - colored cliffs, swirling slickrock, hardened sand dunes, and slot canyons galore.
While beautiful and fun to explore, backpacking in the Escalante Canyons requires thoughtful preparation. The hiking will range from moderate to strenuous, wading through cold creeks and across deep pools, rock scrambling, river walking, and hiking in hot temperatures.
Routes are rarely marked and will require cross country navigation skills across steep and rugged terrain.
