Governor Dodge State Park: winter one night -with candlelight ski/hike

Winter Overnight Trip

Here is an opportunity to try out all your winter gear without being too far from the cars. This is a single night winter camping trip to Governor Dodge SP.

Governor Dodge, in southwestern Wisconsin, is one of the state's largest state parks, with 5,270 scenic acres of steep hills, bluffs, and deep valleys plus two lakes and a waterfall.

Many spectacular rock outcroppings and secluded valleys that are not visible during the summer now mysteriously appear on the landscape.

Who can attend?

This would be a good trip for those new to backpacking or new to winter camping. However, if you are a complete novice, please wait until spring. It's going to be far too cold to enjoy if you're not used to sleeping in a tent and are without proper gear. Last year, it got down to ~10 degrees overnight, so be prepared. Bring too much warm clothing and figure out what you don't need, not the other way around. If you have questions about your gear let one of the organizers know.

We will leave the city Saturday morning and arrive by noon. There are plenty of trails in the area for day hiking after we set up camp and/or Sunday before we leave. There is no set plan so feel free to explore the area. If we get enough snow there is opportunity for sledding, CC skiing, snowshoeing, etc. You will need to bring your own equipment. I will send out information about potential rental places, or you may rent equipment before leaving the city.

Bring some hot n' hearty food, hot coffee/cocoa, etc. Alcohol is fine but please be responsible for your own safety (can be dangerous in cold weather).

On Saturday night, we will join the annual Governor Dodge Candle light Ski and Hike event. Click here for more information >>

  • $15 per campsite (split with up to six people per site).
  • $10 per vehicle for park entrance (unless you have a WI annual pass) and gasoline costs. (split within your car)
  • $5 meetup fee. (pay when you signup)

You are responsible for all fees, so please bring cash.

Organizers will arrange a car pool approximately 10 days prior to the trip. Be sure to check your email during this time period and respond promptly to car pool information requests.

Please email me with any questions.

Don't think I can make meeting, but I'm keeping the weekend free, so put me down for anything that you guys come up with!

Ryan, you are correct. The event is cancelled due to icy conditions. they do not expect snow this week, so all the trails may be a bit slick. Hui and I are going to consider our options, and I'll talk it over with some others at tonight's meeting. Plan A would be to camp anyway, but I'll post a Plan B in the next day or two.

I just called the DNR and they are cancelling the ski/snowshoe due to lack fo snow. They will not allow us to hike the ski trails because they want to keep the base in-tact for grooming. However, there are other trails that we can hike there. Any thoughts?
