I would say a moderate amount. Aside for scouting and hitchhiking in the 60s and 70s I got serious only in the last six years. To make up for lost time and experience I read Ray Jardine's books. Book knowledge is invaluable when you first run up against situations at the limits of your experience. In the last six years I have been down in the Grand Canyon twice, Pictured Rocks, and sections of the Continental Trail (CDT) three times. In 2010 my daughter and I hiked 200 miles of the CDT in eleven days and in 2011 we hiked 65 miles plus climbed 14,000 foot Huron Peak in five days. See the Additional Information below for links to the CDT hike journals.
I am mostly a long trail thru-hiker, mostly the CDT in sections. This is a great group of experienced and competent backpackers.
What a relaxed comfortable way to be introduced to back packing. The leaders are serious, un-pretentious and possessing broad experience. They are also thoughtful and patient.
