Doug Cutting presents: Bringing Search into the Hadoop Ecosystem

Chicago Big Data, in conjunction with Morningstar Tech Talks, is excited to be hosting Cloudera's Chief Architect and Apache Chairman Doug Cutting. Doug will be talking about the intersection of two technologies he's been closely involved with: open-source search and big data. This will be a great opportunity to hear from a co-founder of several prominent open-source projects such as Lucene and Hadoop, so be sure to join us.

Title: Bringing Search into the Hadoop Ecosystem

With MapReduce, Apache Hadoop started as a batch processing system. Since then online, interactive services have been added on top, like HBase and Impala. Now Cloudera has brought search into this ecosystem. Apache Solr provides scalable, reliable, distributed search. Indexes are stored in HDFS, for ease of management. Flume, HBase, Avro and other ecosystem components are integrated to make search a first class citizen of the Hadoop ecosystem.

Doug is the creator of numerous successful open-source projects, including Lucene, Nutch and Hadoop. Doug joined Cloudera in 2009 from Yahoo, where he was a key member of the team that built and deployed a production Hadoop storage and analysis cluster for mission-critical business analytics. Doug holds a Bachelor’s degree from Stanford University and sits on the Board (and is currently chairman) of the Apache Software Foundation.

Well, it was a survey, the technologies discussed are clearly both extensive and detailed and time was limited, so as such it seemed the talk was very well structured for people unfamiliar with these developments. I certainly felt afterward that I at least knew what areas to investigate. However, I will say that links or other pointers to more detailed references on this subject would be very useful indeed. The slides would be a handy reference if available.

More deep technical detail in the presentation would have been valuable. The presentation itself wasn't much more than a rehash of information readily available on Cloudera's website -- the QA afterwards was much more informative.

Great overview of Hadoop and Solr Cloud integration; the balance of technical detail (e.g., the contributions from Blur) and high-level survey made for a very informative talk.

But, if other attendees cancel, people on the wait list will automatically be bumped up. As we get closer to the event, we'll send reminders to attendees to update their status if they find that their plans changed and are no longer able to attend.
