Content Governance – Your Questions Answered

Quality. Everyone wants content that’s well-written, consistent, and on-brand. But who decides? How can organizations govern content effectively? How do they exert control without creating layers of bureaucracy? And how do they navigate the politics and power struggles?

Join us for our next Chicago Content Strategist Meetup featuring a panel of experts adept at producing governance models and building governance teams that succeed for industries like nonprofit, retail, healthcare, insurance, finance and more. Our panel includes:

• Sam Rhee - As Associate Creative Director at Sears Holdings Corporation, Sam's broad knowledge base helps him create effective interactive and experience designs. He leverages his requirements capture and business analysis experience to define quality content governance techniques in the retail space.

• Jennifer L. Fosser - Jennifer L. Fosser has overcome several content governance hurdles during her career.  She has worked with large healthcare insurance and higher education IT departments and is most recently working for UHC, a not-for-profit alliance of academic medical centers and affiliated hospitals providing transparent data analytics and supply chain services, as a Sr. Mgr of Web and Digital Strategies. Combining education and experience working with IT and marketing teams, she is currently working on a large web redesign project for UHC that includes a full content strategy and governance plan to ensure the member experience on the new site remains fresh and engaging.

• Janet Borggren – As a Senior Content Strategist at Razorfish, Janet has helped a large insurance company develop an approach for governing digital content. She also spent many years at Accenture consulting with a variety of companies on content management, methodology, and organizational design.

• Jen O’Brien – An independent consultant, Jen has built content practices for agencies, and designed content governance for organizations like Walgreens and Chicago Field Museum. She has also contributed to Forrester Reports on Governance.

Razorfish will be our host for this event. Networking begins at 5:30, with the panel discussion starting at 6:15. Hope to see you there!

Thanks to all who showed up on a cold and snowy night. I kept thinking about the topic last night and this morning, which is a sign of a good, rich discussion. Have decided to change my answer to the first question Hilary asked about what Governance is. At the time I said it was about defining accountability. After our discussion, I think I'd update that to say it's how an organization ensures that the content achieves its strategic objective.

Sorry, Janet, there are no do-overs in life - or content strategy. Just kidding. Great definition.

I really like that definition—it embeds mission and makes room for iteration and expansion. Really enjoyed last night's discussion...

Thanks to all for the collaborative conversation at yesterday's meetup! It was great to hear the way that many different types of organizations handle governance, pain points, and strategies that work. Loved the interest in this topic - I'll explore ways to expand. Stay tuned!

Thanks for the great discussion. Enjoyed hearing so many different approaches. Since this was such a popular topic, I wonder if it would be valuable to explore it even more. Personally, I'd love to hear more from Jen O'Brien about creating governance strategies. Maybe a workshop or a case study?

Thanks again to everyone who took the time to contribute.

I just changed by RSVP. Wish I could make it, but work is blowing up and I'll never be in from Northbrook in time!

For those of us that is new to this discipline, getting to understands across multimedia is important.

I'm looking forward to attending this event. I would also mention that digital content goes beyond writing alone. More is being done with video, audio/podcasting, SlideShare, and other interactive multimedia. That provides lots more opportunities and challenges. Also very important is the subject of disclosure. Very often I find that sponsored content to be disguised as editorial, which brings up the area of social media compliance. I don't know if that's a topic being discussed, but it definitely falls under governance.
