Screening of "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" with discussion afterward

Mr. & Mrs. Smith (1941) A classic screwball comedy from the master of suspense? Yes, yes, indeed! When Ann Smith (Carole Lombard) discovers that her marriage to David Smith (Robert Montgomery) isn’t valid due to a technicality, she wonders if she should renew her vows. When David muses, in moment of brutal honesty, that if he had it to do all over again, he might not get remarry, Ann decides she wants to call it quits. When she starts dating David’s law partner, Jeff Custer (Gene Raymond), David is determined to win her back at all costs. With a screenplay by Norman Krasna, Hollywood legends Lombard and Montgomery and a supporting cast that includes Jack Carson, Philip Merivale, Lucille Watson, and Esther Dale, you’ll swear the film was directed by Leo McCarey or Howard Hawks.

Terrific screening of Mr & Mrs Smith - a movie I had not seen!! Lombard is so good in what is a funny, but at times, drama queen kind of role! Thought Robert Montgomery's deadpan expressions are a perfect complement to Lombard. Clothes fabulous!! Loved seeing everyone and terrific discussion afterwards as usual. Thanks Stephen for your great behind the scenes insights!!! Won't see you all in August as will be on vacation. Love Suspicion - it's so intense!!! Enjoy!!

Great meetup, everyone. Also great discussion, as usual. It would have been interesting to see if Hitchcock and Lombard would have worked together again on something more "Hitchcockian." She had all the attributes for the perfect Hitchcock heroine.

While watching the movie, I realized I had seen it before but didn't associate it with Hitchcock!

That's a compliment, I think. Hitchcock was just a master director, not just the master of suspense.

Such an interesting film, I didn't know Hitchcock had a talent for comedy as well as suspense.
The plot was predictable, depicting the power struggle between a married couple using emotional manipulation to one up each other, (Just like a real marriage).

Yes, it did capture that manipulation rather well. And Hitchcock had the good fortune to have Robert Montgomery and Carole Lombard to portray the married couple.
