Talk about "The Tree of Life" at Argo Tea

Hello Chicago Film Lovers,

OK, I'm taking a risk, I'm choosing a film I haven't seen before, this film is Terrence Malik's "The Tree of Life". I've heard and read such great things about this film. Some say the film is pretentious, but critics agree, it's a work of art. Ebert compared it to "2001: A Space Odyssey" (see quote below). So for those of you who also haven't seen this movie, hope you are intrigued as I am. And if you have, even better. I look forward to seeing you all at our next meetup to talk about "The Tree of Life".

Ebert quote: "The only other film I've seen with this boldness of vision is Kubrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey," and it lacked Malick's fierce evocation of human feeling . . ."

Hi Rebecca, I watched the movie and loved it. It was about God and life and death and heaven and the story was told best by Terrence Malick. I Looked to see if I have seen any of his other movies and lo and behold he made "Badlands". Until next time. Penny

Very excellent conversation on some of the many fascinating and frustrating aspects to this remarkable film (and leading to a fun discussion of film festivals and "Eternal Sunshine" comaprisons in the bargain!)

At 90 minutes, this was our longest discussion involving Rebecca. I'm
glad there was a lively discussion about this multilayered art film
with big themes. From my perspective, this film is a masterpiece.
Hope to see new members attend. Had dinner at a Thai restaurant
across the street from Argo Tea. I enjoyed the food and restaurant
and recommend we meet there instead of Argo Tea.

Smaller group this time, but this made the discussion more enriching. Great movie to discuss

Hi Rebecca, I have been out of town so I did not get a chance to watch "The Tree of Life". I have it and will watch it though. See you next time. Penny

Hi Penny, You should definitely come to the meetup, even if you haven't seen the film, it's always a good time and we like seeing you. But if you'd rather watch it first, I understand. If I don't see you tonight, looking forward to seeing you in September!

This article does a superb job of pointing out what makes "Tree of Life" such a remarkable film:

It's a little 'spoilerly', but recommended for people to get an idea of what "Tree of Life" is trying to do. Opening line:

"The Tree of Life is maddening, exhilarating, gorgeous, ponderous, insightful, pretentious, epic, shallow, beautiful, and strange — the apotheosis of Terrence Malick’s entire career."
