Filmmaker Meetup

Our next filmmaker meetup is nearly here! We know you've been waiting anxiously for another excuse to hang out at Chicago Filmmakers with your local indie filmmaking community. What better time to find your next crew/inspiration/motivation/producer/agent than just after the July holiday! Join us on Tuesday, July 9th from 7-9pm to mix and mingle with local filmmakers. Come network and learn about projects that are looking for people right now. Maybe you have a project of your own? Looking for inspiration? Jump in, we won't bite!

Special Guest Dan Rybicky! Co-Producer/Director of Kartemquin Films’ Almost There

Dan Rybicky is the co-producer and director of Almost There, a feature documentary on the life and work of folk artist Peter Anton.  The film recently received Open Call Funding from ITVS and Dan will join with us to show clips from the film, talk about working on a feature documentary, securing funding from ITVS, and launching a major outreach campaign surrounding a production.

Dan is an assistant professor at Columbia College Chicago hosting such events as #DocYourWorld and is also an established writer, photographer and playwright. Clips and photographs from the Almost There project were featured in an exhibit at the Intuit Center for Outsider and Intuitive Art and was published as a book by Princeton Architectural Press in 2011. Dan’s interview with director Karyn Kusama (“And Maybe There is a Way to Give Hollywood the Kick in the Ass That It Needs”) was recently published in Filming Difference: Actors, Directors, Producers and Writers on Gender, Race and Sexuality in Film (University of Texas Press, May 2009), and his short story “Picky” was included in Front Forty Press’s award-winning Short Stories Illustrated by Artists. Dan was a member of The Playwrights Collective and his plays were produced in venues throughout New York City. During this time, he worked in various capacities for Martin Scorsese and John Sayles. Dan recently received a CCC Faculty Development Grant for Under Ed’s Roof, an essay film he’s making about his relationship to architect/developer Ed Noonan and Tryon Farm, a conservation community located in Northwest Indiana.

For the uninitiated: this bimonthly networking event provides a chance for filmmakers to meet and collaborate on projects. Are you a screenwriter looking for a producer? A director looking for a director of photography? This event is open to anyone who is interested in making independent media: editors, actors, art directors, composers, make-up artists... Bring your resume and business cards, and we’ll handle the rest. Special guest speakers and community businesses will also be featured.

It's totally free for Chicago Filmmaker members, $5 for non-members. To inquire about membership, go to: http://chicagofilmmakers.org/cf/membership or call[masked]-1447. We're bringing the drinks back and we'll be full of cool people talking film... don't miss it!

working to produce a short for the competition "project imagination". a 5 minute short about a young man's final chance at connecting with the girl he has long admired. Our intention, "A shot in one". this means we will do one fluid take as he interacts at a party scene and is finally compelled to approach the girl of his dreams. As is my nature, I like to cover all bases, and we are working in the option to use some techniques to seamlessly cut together should it become apparent it is not working in the time allotted. While we have many resources in place, feel free to offer up your acting chops for one of the featured roles, the many extras we will need.
A "party" location should you have one better than the one we already have. And any cast or crew you want to suggest. This is due mid July and we will be moving very quickly, Hope to enthusiastically hear back from everyone, looking to make this an exciting and fun project for all.
Thank you, have an awesome day. JD
