Make baby blankets for hospitalized infants & children

Informational and start-up meeting. Thinking about recurring the first Sunday of each month. Baby blankets are needed for a non-profit I know that ships to hospitals all over the 4-state Midwest region. We'll make them simple and quick. No larger than 36"x36". Knit, crochet, fleece: we love them all. Will have pattern and yarn suggestions. Plenty of 40%-off coupons from nearby Michaels. Come in to visit awhile and work on a project (always great fun), or just drop by to leave a blanket and/or get some information.

Thanks to everyone who stopped by. We had a great time. We collected 9 blankets and made plans for dozens more. Total blankets to date: 9. We will keep a running tally just for the fun of it.

Hey Kelly - don't worry if you can't get to the discount outlet, or that you're new to making the blankets. I also have an instruction handout--it says the fleece is 60" wide and that 1 yard will make 2 blankets. And there is never a deadline. We are just going to meet once a month and make blankets year-round. I have not tried soliciting any donations, but another volunteer I know has found a great online store -- tons of choices and prices cheaper that most shops. It will be fun to compare notes, and maybe we can coordinate a larger order for the group. Looking forward to seeing you on Sunday

Oh boy. I just realized we have to bring our own material. Aaahhh, as a totally inexperienced tie-blanket maker can anyone point me in the direction of how much material (size?) and how to cut/prep?! Also, has anyone had any luck getting fleece donated or at a discounted price since its for a charity? Feeling a little lost : /

Alright. I found some how-to's online. Feeling ok about that. Also, I found a place called Textile Discount Outlet. Super limited hours on the weekends, so I'll try to pop in there Friday afternoon. Just need advice on size I should get. Really trying to put this together! : )

Hey Everyone - looking forward to Nov 3. I will be in the back room at Panera. Look for table(s) adorned with baby blankets and informational handouts and Michaels coupons. For anyone who will have a finished blanket to bring, we need to ask that you wash them in advance, then perhaps wrap them in a clean grocery plastic bag. And when you dry, please no fabric softener or sheets (possible allergic reactions in the children). For knit and crochet - it will soften the yarn considerably, and free the blanket from any dust, oils from your hands, pet hairs, etc. For fleece blankets, it's only really essential if your fabric has been around pets or smoking.

Another tip: the 1:00 start time is not a formal start time. These will always be drop-in-as-you-can kinds of meetings. At 3:00 sharp, I must be on the sidewalk outside, and someone from Starlight is going to swing by in a car to pick up whatever blankets we have.

Ritesh: so glad to hear you will try to make the next meeting.

Hi Leslie - yes, you'll need to bring your own material. If you crochet, I will have yarn for several granny square blankets that I have already started. You are welcome to take one and finish it. If you are planning to make the no-sew fleece blankets, you will need to cut the strips ahead of time, then you can tie the knots at the meetup. There will not be table space to lay out the fleece properly to do the cutting.

Hey Everyone - a couple comments about the questions that have been posted:
    a) Absolutely positively bring kids.
    b) By all means come to the event even if you do not know how to knit or crochet or make no-sew fleece blankets. One of us might be able to get you started, and we recommend classes at Michaels. There are also other ways to participate.
    c) We are planning a recurring meeting, so no worries if you can't make this one. I'm still partial to first Sundays of the month, 1pm - 3pm. We can move it around of course, but for people's planning and schedule, I've found it's great to have a consistent time slot.
    d) The non-profit that we are making blankets for is Starlight Children's Foundation/Midwest region. They have just joined this group, and posted some additional events. See "Starlight Volunteer" and drop them a quick welcome.

I just read the description. I do not know how to knit or crochet. Can I still attend and maybe do something else?
