CANCELED due to snow - Come inspire students with fun Arts, Science, and Math

  • Feb 8, 2014 · 10:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

We have a need for volunteers on Saturdays to work with students in fun Reading, Chicago History, Science and Art/Math projects. We will be working with Reading and Arts for first and second graders, Chicago history with the 3rd graders, science experiments for 4th graders, and Creative Arts with a math element for 5th graders.

The volunteer project time is Saturday morning from 10 AM to 12:30 PM at the McCormick Elementary School in the Little Village neighborhood.

The young students need role models, especially young girls that think science and math are intimidating. Come show them it can be fun and exciting. Show them knowledge is empowering. Come inspire them!

No advanced skills required, all easy to follow instructions will be given to you by an experienced project leader, and you will work with small groups other volunteers and students. We will do our best to match your interest with the grade activities, but due to limited volunteer spots per class, you may be assign to where the need is the greatest, so your flexibility is much appreciated.

All you need to bring is an open mind and kindness to share with the children. You will both discover the joy of learning and making art.

Volunteers will meet in the lunchroom of the annex building (to the left of the larger main school building). Free street parking is available. Ask for Wilson.

Our future project dates are Saturday Feb 22nd and  March 8 and 22nd, April 5th and 26th. Save the dates and the opportunities will be posted on here for sign up in the near future.

Feb 22nd will also be a field trip event, so it will start at 9:15 am and ends by 1 pm.

If you want to bring a guest, have them sign up individually. The school requires all volunteer's full names, due to CPS policy.

You can also sign up directly or pick a different project on web site.

Our school project for this Saturday has been canceled due to the current snow and cold weather. We will resume our volunteer work on Feb 22nd, which will be a special project as we will be going on a field trip with the kids at McCormick School. More details will be posted about the next field trip event soon. I am sorry for any disappointment, I know everybody was looking forward to this Saturday. The safety of the children and the volunteers are always our top priority.

CAR POOL - If anybody is planning to drive and can offer car pooling for your fellow volunteers, please post here on where you are coming from (neighborhood, or expressway) and what route you are taking. McCormick School is near 27th Street and Kedize. If you are looking for a ride, please state the nearest intersection that you can be picked up

If you are taking the CTA, from downtown on Madison & State, take the #60 bus toward Cicero/24th place and you will get off at 26th & Kedzie, and you can walk 1 block West to Sawyer and 1 block South to the school.

If you take the Blue line, get off at Kedzie-Homan and then get on the #52 Bus toward 63rd Pl/Kedzie. Get off at Kedzie & 27th Street and walk 1 block West to SawyerAve.

If you take the Pink Line, get off at Kedzie-Cermak and then get on the #52 Bus toward 63rd Pl/Kedzie. Get off at Kedzie & 27th Street and walk 1 block West to Sawyer Ave.

You are great at it Caroline! I don't know anybody else that can inspire kids to like math by explaining calculating medication dosage on a chihuahua? :)
