Help sort donated food for Lakeview Pantry West, Northside, Daytime

Come help feed low income families in need of food in the Lakeview neighborhood. We will be sorting donated produce from local grocery stores to prepare for the distribution later that night.

Our volunteer team will help unload 1200 to 2000 pounds of donated food from a delivery van and bring them down 1 flight of stairs to the basement pantry. Average weight for the bags and boxes are around 20 to 40 pounds. We work in teams so you do not need to lift anything heavier than you feel comfortable doing. We will then weight and sort the food and prepare them for distribution to the pantry’s clients, that takes place later that night. Please dress in comfortable clothes, no open toe shoes as you may have to deal with heavy cans and boxes that may fall near your feet. Dress as if you are going to the gym for a light workout. If you are not capable of heavy lifting, we will do our best to accommodate you with other tasks that are not as physically demanding. There will be need for volunteers to organize and sort small and light items on shelves. The work we will be doing is very important. You will directly be helping feed over 300 people that may otherwise go hungry for the week. These includes children and at risk seniors.

This is a day time 2 hour project on Thursday morning, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM
Lakeview Pantry West is located at 1414 W. Oakdale Ave, Chicago IL, 60657. This is not their main pantry on Broadway. It is near the intersection of Lincoln, Southport and Wellington. Lakeview Pantry West is located in the basement of a red brick building, behind the Athenaeum theater.  Look for the big green metal donation box and the entrance is on the right of the box.  Another easy way to find the entrance is look for a  private house at 1415 W. Oakdale and then cross the street. The entrance is directly on the other side of the street, down a basement. Please ignore any signs about the gymnasium entrance being moved, as it doesn’t affect our Pantry location.

You can find driving and public transportation directions with this Google map link: http://goo.gl/maps/A0ZCl

There is a parking lot on Southport and Oakdale. Lakeview Pantry can provide you with a permit for your windshield so you can park for free. You can find limited free parking on the side streets as well.

Thank you every one for coming out to help unload and sort the food for the pantry today. Your effort and support helped feed about 60 households on an average Thursday night distribution. That's hundreds of people in need, many of those are seniors and children. Marci, thank you for coming out to help even though you are so close to your due date. May your baby always know the kindness and compassion you have shared with the world today. :)

Hi Marci, yes, there are many tasks you can do to help without lifting any heavy boxes. There is 1 flight of stairs you'll have to climb down to get to the basement pantry, about 10 steps. There are many small items that needs to be sorting and shelving, like can soups, bread, apples, oranges, etc. I once had a volunteer that was almost 9 months pregnant, about 1 week from her due date to come help at a pantry, it worked out fine, her water didn't break on site. :)
