Rifftrax Live: Godzilla '98 City!

Oh, no!  There goes RiffTrax!  Go, go, big lizard!

From the team that brought you Stargate and Independence Day came... actually not a bad monster movie.  Sure, you could probably cut 45 minutes off the damn thing and wouldn't lose anything, but Godzilla '98 (or simply 'Zilla, now that the monster from this movie has been absorbed into Toho canon as a separate creature from their flagship, Godzilla/Gojira) is mostly a solid movie about a giant monster wrecking a city that makes two major mistakes: 1, calling itself "Godzilla" when it very clearly is not, and 2, operating under the delusion that American audiences continued liking Matthew Broderick after Ferris Bueller's Day Off enough to put him front and center in their monster flick.  For that reason alone this movie deserves the RiffTrax treatment.

I'll be at the Kerasotes ICON at Roosevelt, so come join me!

I had forgotten whole terrible sections of the movie, but the Rifftraxers made up for it with some of their best lines ever (shot of an exploded church: "Looks like Woody Allen finally went to confession."). It was followed up by an epic visit to the circular table of bacon popcorn upstairs, where the talk ranged from encounters with the MST3k crew to joke thievery, to how Rosemont treats Chicago like a screen saver for transient visitors, to incredibly skeptical singles.

Sorry I didn't make it. It was more convenient to go to the one in Melrose park

Can't wait to see how the crowd reacts to the scene where newsman Harry Shearer describes the "Zilla" rampage as, "The worst thing to happen to New York since the attack on the World Trade Center." (Really - he actually says this halfway through the movie.)

To be fair, it was 1998. Also, the original is 2:18. I'm sure they'll edit it down. God help me I hope they edit it down.

Keep in mind while watching this that the original Godzilla was supposed to be an analogy to atomic technology - and reflecting on the destruction dabbling with this technology created, in particular the hundreds of thousands of people who died from the nuclear bombings in WWII. This makes modern Hollywood seem even more buffoonish.

We're in H-8.9. Looking forward to seeing everyone again. Are we all meeting afterwards at the big circular booth in the bar upstairs?

Most definitely! We'll be in seats G3-4, and I'll be wearing a ketchup shirt (you'll know it when you see it 8).

Hey everyone, something came up for me and I won't be able to go. I'll keep this open for everyone else and hopefully, everyone will meetup in the theater. If you haven't been to this before and haven't found anyone, we usually go upstairs to the restaurant afterwards and have some bacon popcorn (You will want some, trust me). So sorry for the this! Have a great time and hope to see you all this Saturday at the Irish American!
