What is your background in Machine Learning (e.g. what was your major, how long have you been studying related topics, do you use similar methodologies for work)?

My major was biology. I started programming 4 years ago and started serious statistical work 2 years ago. Andrew Ng's class opened my eyes as has reading some of the kaggle blog posts (http://blog.kaggle.com/). I'm blown away by the power of gbm in R.

What types of meetings would you like from the ML Meetup? (presentations, interactive study sessions, hackathons, etc.)

It would be awesome to work on a kaggle competition together. Machine learning is fun because progress is easily quantified (i.e. performance metrics). I'd like this same feel at the meetings. I'd like to get my hands dirty rather.

Introduction

I'm a phd student at Northwestern using machine learning to predict the health effects of ionizing radiation. I love the recent wave of online learning including Ng's ml-class and Thrun's self driving car class.
