Paulie's Pasture Incredible Chicken and Eggs

  • May 24, 2012 · 7:30 PM

Hello folks, as you know, I’ve been looking for farmers to work with since I moved here, but haven’t had as much time to do so as I would have liked. Luckily one of my friends told me about Paulie’s Pasture, a small farm in Lee county 10 miles e. of Dickson, IL, 15 miles west Rochelle.

Paul raises lots of different animals on pasture. I am picky about eggs, so I was delighted to receive some of his. I usually buy my eggs from the farmers at the Green City market and they are OK, but these eggs are so much better. The creamy yolks are bright orange like marigold flowers. Right now Paulie has eggs to sell for $4 a dozen, plus whole chickens at $3.70 per lb. Discounts and extra products like vegetables and ducks are offered if you become a regular subscriber. I am going to buy some more next week if any of you would like to arrange a drop-off 5/24. If you are interested, definitely suggest a location. I live in Lincoln Park at Fullerton and Clark and that could work, but you know they call it “Lincoln hard-to-park” for a reason. If you work downtown, Paul could also drop off your order at your office during the day. If you do RSVP, I will contact you to get your exact order and send a receipt with how much to bring- please bring cash only!

It might also be a great option to discuss splitting some more of his products together. I have already told him I’m definitely into getting a goat and a lamb (or more). We could also split a pig. Let me know if you are interested, either we could meet for drinks after the drop off Thurs or something, or just email me.

Culinary wonders created from Paul's products!

Yes please. Not even sure where to start and what part...What is the least gamey tasting?

I'm happy to schedule something. Let me know.

Yes. I don't have a refrigerator here, tho.

Hey Paul, Still looking for a chance to try the eggs/chicken. I'll be back in Logan Square from the 23rd to the 4th of July. Perhaps sometime then?

I'm happy to host another Meatshare here at Knit1. I have been raving about you and your eggs and chickens. I have customers who have asked to be included. We can do it through Meet up or I'm happy to do it, too.

Not sure how meetup works but do we need to create a new post for each meeting? Are we going to have one designated day where Paul drops off meat at the various locations and we pick up? I feel like things were going great and then everything stopped abruptly. Paul drops off at my office but I'd be open to a drop off on the north side since we live there.

I could possibly host a drop off. I am at Ashland and Wellington, essentially, and I live across from a ginormous parking lot. More importantly, who's gonna get down on a lamb/cow with me???

Great event. Only in a big city can I begin to imagine meeting the farmer for fresh eggs and whole chickens inside a knitting shop.

Grab bags sound like fun. I'd definitely do that.

Meatshare only offers meat in quantities like 15 lb "grab bag" or 1/8 pig or 1/2 lamb. You can see this on our NYC site http://www.meetup.com/meatshare/ If you are interested in buying only specific cuts, you can contact the farmer individually.

Ah, okay! I'll hit you all up on the next one!

Sorry about this guys, but there are not enough eggs, so I'm going to have to limit everyone to one dozen (except for Joey since she is hosting). Unless we have some no-shows and then there might be more. Also if this location is bad for you, let me and Paul know if you might be interested in hosting their own location next time. We can throw in some rewards for hosts.

There shouldn't be any parking issue. We have trucks and the like coming here all the time and there's a metered lot just a few feet away. One of the real benefits of this location! Also, Trader Joe's is half a block away in the other direction and don't quote me, but I have never heard of anyone getting towed from their lot.

Paul: Totally fine, and I do have a driver who can cart me around if I need to do a pickup somewhere, too -- I'm actually at Halsted and Cermak in Pilsen, so the Blue Line is just a 10 minute hike into UIC territory.

I live a block away from Knit and there is metered parking near Knit, but plenty of free street parking on the street 1 block south by Trader Joe's.

Crap this parking is bad news for me (big old SUV without power steering) -- is there a downtown location for pickup that I could CTA to instead? I just want to try 3 dozen of the eggs and see how they rock before the next event.

@Melissa I can pick up my order tonight whenever you are home. My number is[masked]-5411. Shoot me a text and I'll walk up. Please send me a receipt so I can stop by the bank and get exact change.

@Paul I eat a lot of bacon and pork shoulder, so I'd be down for some pig depending on price. And, I can be talked into lamb, but I need more info on how this works. Can we order specific cuts? Where can we get a list of animals, cuts, and prices?

I did get in touch with him. Turns out he's in Logan a lot, so I will just arrange with him directly. Thanks!

I'm not that interested in this particular venture with eggs and chickens, but I'm all for a pig, goat or lamb (esp. lamb) on the whole. Let's do it.

    May 23, 2012

  • melissa m.

@Tyler I'll bring them home and just let me know when you want to pick them up later on Thurs or on Friday

    May 23, 2012

  • Tyler L.

@ Melissa That works for me if it's not too much of a hassle for you.

    May 23, 2012

  • Rob L.

@ Tyler and Melissa I live nearby you folks and can also make a drop. I am at Lincoln and Dickens.

    May 23, 2012

  • melissa m.

@ Tyler you can pick up your stuff from me later if you are still interested. I"m at Clark and Fullerton.

This location is also a dealbreaker for me. Sorry, without a car I can't justify the hour-long roundtrip bus ride. It seems like more than a few of us live in Lincoln Park, any chance we can change the location? I'm at Clark & Armitage, but I can walk up to Clark & Fullerton :)

@ Cori you should contact Paul because I think he drops off in Logan Square at other times.

Hey Melissa. I'm working out of Logan Square and won't have a car, so I am going to have to skip this one. Let me know on the next one. I really want to find a good pastured chicken and egg source, so I'll definitely be in for the next one.

    May 22, 2012

  • melissa m.

Hey Cori, I just send you an email with info about having him bring to the office.

    May 21, 2012

  • Cori

Not sure if I will be working from downtown or Logan Square this week. Hopefully, I'll know soon. If I'm working from Logan, it will be easier for me to pick up elsewhere. If I am downtown, I'll be doing normal office hours, so it's a bit tougher.

  • joey

I can be flexible about location, I'm not too far from Clark and Fullerton or my business is on Lincoln and Grace. I mostly want eggs this week!
