Responding to Life With Joy

Sometimes, even small things can trigger big, automatic reactions. Somebody cuts us off in traffic and we gesture angrily and smolder for hours. Or somebody says something minor and we react with sharp, hurtful words. The practice of Mindfulness helps us to respond thoughtfully to life’s ups and downs rather than reacting automatically. As we increasingly respond mindfully to life rather than react, the way opens for the deep joy of the present moment to emerge.

Join us for a day-long retreat in which we will explore how the meditative practice of Mindfulness can help us skillfully and joyfully respond to life. We will practice sitting and walking meditation, mindful movement, and practical exercises aimed at creating increased present-moment awareness, self-acceptance and wisdom about our inner selves. This retreat is appropriate for both newcomers to Mindfulness and meditation and for experienced practitioners.

We are honored to have David Haskin lead this event for us. David has practiced meditation since 1971 and is an ordained member of Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh’s core practice community, the Order of Interbeing. He teaches Mindfulness widely, including to men’s groups, those in recovery, veterans and inmates in Wisconsin’s prisons.

Please wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothes. If you use a meditation cushion or bench, please bring it. Chairs will also be available for meditation. Please note that much of this retreat will be conducted in Noble Silence. Bring a brown bag lunch and a beverage for the meal at noon.

Date, time & location: Saturday, June 1, 2013, 10AM-5PM. We will meet in Fellowship Hall at North Shore Unitarian Church, 2100 Half Day Rd., Deerfield, IL. The main entrance is located off the parking lot behind the Church. Please plan to arrive at 9:45AM so we can start the day at 10AM.

Cost: $10 per Person (scholarships available). Fees offset some of our expenses but do NOT include compensation for the teacher. Following an ancient tradition, David offers these teachings freely and will gratefully accept dana, or a free-will offering, at the end of the retreat if you are able and if you find the teachings helpful.

Directions: North Shore Unitarian Church is located in Deerfield, 29 miles north of the center of downtown Chicago. The church is located on Half Day Road (Route 22) west of Waukegan Road and east of the I-94 Tollway (about a ½ mile east of the tollway and 1 mile west of Waukegan on the north side of the street.) The church shares a driveway with 3000 Half Day Road. Look for their sign as you approach the building. Once you’ve turned into the driveway, you’ll take an immediate right to enter the church campus. The front door is in the back! Ample parking will be available at no cost.

If you have any questions about this event, please feel free to contact either Steve Starr, organizer or Mark Z, assistant organizer. Hope you are able to be present with us!

Thanks to all in attendance for making this a joyous day of practice. Dave really brought his "A" game and I am extremely grateful to him for sharing his wisdom with us. I agree with my co-host Steve, it was wonderful to see how nicely all of our groups mixed together, let's do it again sometime! Hoping that everyone experiences all of their intended joys revealed at this retreat and many more!!

The day was a wonderful opportunity for me to practice mindfulness... stay with my own experience in the moment. Thank you David and thank you Mark for creating this! Seeing the Northwest Suburban Meditation group, the Chicago Weekly Sitting Meditation group and the Northshore Unitarian Church come together brought me joy!

I can't make it. Send a prayer my way. My legs got a bit worse. A long drive might be too hard don't want to keep some one else from attending. Thank you!

Anybody planning to carpool? I live in the Albany Park neighborhood in Chicago (near Kimball and Montrose).

Hi Steve. Thanks for the offer! I'll take you up on it if I don't get any other offers, since I'd prefer to leave a little later if possible.

Hi Steve. No one else has stepped up to carpool, but I think I'm going to decline your kind offer of a ride and take the train instead. That way I can get an extra hour of sleep! :-) See you there.

I'm already scheduled to work that day. I will try to work mindfully, though!
