Chicago Weekly Sitting Meditation Group - 1/30

Everyone is welcome to join our weekly meditation on Monday evening at 7:00pm. All levels of experience are welcome. This group is great for people who have never meditated before and for those that have been meditating for years. The only prerequisite is a desire to meditate with others with a variety of experience levels in a supportive group setting. This group is open to all schools of thought and you are welcome regardless of your religious tradition—Christian, Jewish, Hindu, Muslim or Buddhist. You are welcome if you have no label for your beliefs or do not wish to pursue anything other than a greater sense of peace, equanimity or physical health in your life.

LOCATION: We meet at The Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in the second floor Passavant Room. Holy Trinity is conveniently located three blocks west of Chicago's Wrigley Field at 1218 West Addison Street. Please enter through the door on Magnolia Street. There are two doors; please use the door furthest north that says 3609 above it.

PARKING: After 6:00 p.m. neighborhood permits (383) are needed. We have permits available thanks to meditators who live in the 383 neighborhood-parking zone. You can buy a permit for $0.50. There are also parking meters on Southport (about 3 blocks away).

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION: Red Line Addison stop at Wrigley Field; walk west to the church. Brown Line Southport stop; walk north to Addison and east to the church. #9 Ashland/Addison bus stop; walk east to the church. #152 Addison/Racine bus stop is 1/4 block east and Addison/Lakewood stop is 1/2 block west of the church. #22 Clark/Addison bus stop is 2 blocks east of the church.

WHAT TO WEAR / BRING WITH YOU: When you come to the meetup, wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothes. If you prefer to sit on the floor for meditation, please bring your own cushion, blanket, yoga mat or foam blocks—whatever it is that makes you most comfortable when you sit. There are folding chairs for those who prefer to sit in a chair. Please arrive at 7pm. The doors will lock at 7:15pm. Please do not be late. It is not fair to yourself or the others to arrive after 7:15 p.m. (unless previously arranged). Thanks in advance for coming early or on time!

FORMAT:
• We begin the evening with a "centering" practice and a brief group introduction.
• Next, the organizer goes over some brief instructions.
• Then we begin two 15-minute meditation sessions. A bell will ring after the first 15-minutes and again at the end of 30-minutes. On occasion, if space in the room permits, we may do a 10-minute sit, followed by a 10-minute walking meditation and a 15-minute sit.
• Afterwards, there is time for any comments and mingling with the other meditators. We also usually have a group reading and discussion.
• The session typically lasts 90 minutes.

SUGGESTED DONATION: The fee for each session is a $1 suggested donation to cover the meetup.com fee, parking permits and space costs. We are responsible to pay a generously reduced rent to Holy Trinity. Please be mindful that heat, air conditioning, lights and janitorial services come with costs. When you can practice generosity for the gift we have been given, it is greatly appreciated.

An excellent space for all levels. My first time there we were given a Buddhist-type practice, and the space is probably open to allow any sort of inner practice as long as it won't disturb the instructed one (with sounds, movements). The diversity of the crowd of about 25 was impressive - ages, colors, nationalities. There might've been slightly more men than women, and there seemed to me to be a core group of about five or six middle-aged-ish men who had a lot to say during the discussion afterward. it was a little hard to get a word in during the discussion for less aggressive talkers. But it was a good discussion anyway. I will be going again. :)

Many thanks to Steve, and to all who attended, especially the first timers. It was a very rewarding experience and a good discussion as always! I look forward to our next meeting.

A very inspirational evening. I am very grateful for the curious energy provided by so many new practitioners in our circle. A genuine honor to be present & witness the first steps of the courageous path's which you have all decided to embark upon. Wishing you all the benefits which this practice has to offer. Welcome back Ernest, Ken & Krishna!! Wonderful to have you all back with us. Your energy & insights are always appreciated . Steve, thanks for being so welcoming, supportive & non-judgmental. By living the Truth of who you are, you have consistently guided this group to a genuine place of Love & compassion. What a blessing for us all. Namaste

It's more for beginners. A lot of people there did not know how to meditate.
