The original plan was to skip December's meeting, but an opportunity presented itself to have an interesting meeting!
An Analysis of the Redesign of the CoffeeScript Compiler
Michael Ficarra was recently crowdfunded to design and build an alternative CoffeeScript compiler. It has many improvements over the original compiler. By using and exposing standard intermediate representations, he was able to allow users of the compiler to take advantage of many tools that operate on those interfaces. This also brought contributions to those projects into his project's scope. As a result, he contributed source map support to escodegen, which many compile-to-JS languages use as a backend; now those languages all have source map support.
Michael will give an hour-long experience report on the design and development of his new compiler with a focus on the importance of its use of standardised IRs. The target audience includes persons with an interest in CoffeeScript, compile-to-JS languages, or in making their tools more useful to their users by exposing standard IRs.
