LIght It Up Blue at The Bean

Many of the buildings along the skyline will be lit up in blue for World Autism Awareness Day.  This is a unique opportunity to shoot the skyline in a different way.  We'll photograph the event at The Bean, wander the AT&T Plaza a bit to catch some buildings from there, and then head up Michigan Avenue as far as time permits (meaning until I get tired or cold, you never know), photographing buildings along the way.

Unless you have really, really, steady hands you'll need a tripod.  A wide angle lens is good for capturing many buildings at once, and a telephoto lens is good for capturing detail of lights at the tops of buildings.

There is a Facebook event at https://www.facebook.com/events/345507825554497

If you can't make it downtown, you can still participate.  I'm putting a list of buildings that will be lit up blue in the comments, one may be near you.  Some buildings will be lit up only on the 2nd, some the 1st and 2nd, some the whole week, and some the whole month.  I don't have the details on each.

I'd like to put together an album of the best shots of each building, or the skyline, and forward it to Autism Speaks for publication on their various websites.  There will be photos from around the world, and yours could be among them.

This map is not finished.  I've added about a 3rd of the locations.

Thanks to everybody for coming out. I hope you met some new photography friends and had a chance to take a lot of good photographs. I tried to keep things as organized as possible under the circumstances, but with 100+ people there it was difficult, that's why I tried to do as much advanced preparation as possible. If you haven't downloaded the map of buildings I provided you can do it now and still have time to get out and shoot some buildings.

For those of you that did not see the offer, I'm holding an HDR class this Saturday, which would certainly help you out in getting better photographs in situations such as this. The shot I posted in the album was done in HDR.

Attendees to this meetup receive $10 off of the price of the class with code "HDR10OFF" at checkout. You can sign up for the class through the Chicagoland Digital Photography Meetup Group.

I've created a Google Maps interactive map of the buildings that are supposed to be lit up in blue, the link is below. (Not shown are Wrigley Field and Brookfield Zoo.) I will also have some printed maps available tonight, and they will have a valuable coupon good towards my HDR class this Saturday. I think you'll find tonight how HDR photography can be really useful in photographing buildings at night, especially with dark blue lights, it would have been better if the timing worked out to have the class before this meetup., but the lessons learned can be used for a lot of the times buildings are lit up in colors or just genral photography. Contact me if you'd like more information.

I spent some time scoping out the territory last night. I saw quite a few buildings lit up. About a dozen were visible from Michigan Avenue between Millennium Park and the Tribune Tower. The Willis/Sears Tower antennas and the Tribune Tower domes are notable.

Well, you picked a winner! Besides this group, there are about 120 people signed up from the Chicagoland Digital Photography Meetup group. I'm running that also as an assistant organizer in the group. Don't be intimidated by the size of the meetup, just walk up and say hi, a bunch of friendly people, and almost anybody will be willing to help you out if you ask for it.

Wish I could join everyone, but I work nights during the week, so photoshoots at night during the week are out for me. Hope everyone has a great time and gets great shots!

This sounds very interesting. Not sure if I can make it downtown or not that evening, but will try very hard to see if I can!
