(3 Hours Each)What You Learn In Photo I
Photo I is a comprehensive class about the fundamentals of photography. While digital imaging is new to photography, "digital" refers only to the way the image is captured and stored. Digital chips replace film. Most of the other facets of photography are more than 150 years old.
In Photo I you will learn about correct exposure, what makes the "right exposure" and why. You'll discover the meaning of shutter speeds and f-stops, how to stop motion or let a "subject's motion" blur in just the right way. You will also learn about "depth-of-field": how much of the picture you should have in focus and how to use "out of focus" in just the right way.
In Lab you will learn the right way to burn a DVD to save your images permanently. Also in Lab you will learn how to convert your color images to black & white and how to print using a high quality, archival, ink-jet printer. The computer program we use to manipulate photographs is called "LightRoom." It is a program you can afford, and it is much less complicated than Photoshop.
In the Lab there is at least one teacher for every five students/computers.
In Photo I you also will learn about composition for photography and ways to approach the "critique" of photographs-your own, and the work of others.
One of the many unique features of Photo I is Richard's distinctive three-week assignment, "The Psychological Relationship between the Subject and the Photographer." Richard created this assignment in 1970 and has spent 40 years with more than 12,000 students fine tuning the principles and critique. (All other versions of this assignment are shallow imitations of the real deal.) This assignment will teach you about ethics and law in photography, and about the subtleties of what happens when you point a camera at someone or someone points a camera at you.
Each week, you'll get a "shooting" assignment, and in each Lab, a corresponding "print" assignment.
There Will Be Weekly Discussions Of Your Assignments With Your Teachers And Classmates.
After completing Photo I, each student who attended all of the classes and Labs, should be able to reliably photograph and print with success and confidence.
Photo I lays the proper foundation for the more technical Photo II and Photo III classes.
The seven weeks go by fast, but Richard gives you his trademark guarantee:
Laughter Will Be Heard & Learning Will Occur ;-)

. > So what's this about going into Chicago
for an Oak Park photography class???
Richard Stromberg has been teaching photography in Chicago for four decades. When gas prices went sky high a few years ago, people from the western suburbs kept asking, ?When are you going to offer something out here? With the long commute at rush hour and high cost of gas, I just can't take the time from my family.?
So what if photography students could attend regular classes in Oak Park and then come to the city on the weekends to use the photo labs?
And that?s just what Richard has done. His Oak Park Photography Classes?both digital and film?will be the same photography program enjoyed by more than 12,000 people. Richard and his fellow teachers will conduct classes in Oak Park. But because rents and computer labs are expensive, he?ll hold the computer labs for those students on the weekends, in his new Chicago space in the Lakeview/Ravenswood neighborhood.
At his new location, Richard has reduced the cost of his classes by more than 25 percent. On New Year?s Day, Chicago Photography Classes
completed an expansion that tripled the space from what it was on Feb. 1 of last year. The new computer labs are more than three times larger than last year, with both PCs and iMacs, and seven new "Best In Class" Epson Archival ink jet printers.
So how about it? A class closer to home, with a visit to the city on the weekend! Come in for a brunch with friends and then attend your lab. Or come to your lab and then head out to dinner or a show.
Richard and his teachers have many years of experience, the curriculum is proven, and our community offers you hundreds of students to learn and share with??..
The only accent here is on learning.
At Richard Stromberg's Oak Park Photography Classes we won't try to sell you, caps or t-shirts with our logo on it. We won't ask you for contributions, or charge you to attend a Shows Opening party. We will, teach and work with you, to foster a safe community, where you will learn something every time you walk through the door.
Our promise to you: Laughter Will Be Heard & Learning Will Occur ;-)
