Meet & Greet w/ Tabletop Workshop

Chicago Photography Events and Outings Members,

I have great news!

In partnership with Harrington College of Design in downtown Chicago, our next meet up event is scheduled for Wednesday, February 19th, from 6-pm at Harrington's campus at 200 W. Madison (cross street- Wells). The evening will kick off with a social mixer from 6-7pm where pizza and beverages will be provided, followed by an hour long studio workshop in commercial tabletop photography conducted by the school's Studio Lead and program founder Dirk Fletcher (head to www.dirkfletcher.com to visit his personal website, www.dirkfletcher.blogspot.com to view his blog). There is no cost to attend the event, however, 10 attendees must be present for the workshop to run so please honor your RSVP, both as a courtesy to the school and fellow members!!! Cameras are not required to participate, but are highly encouraged in order to practice techniques.

Harrington is located directly off of the CTA Washington/Wells brown, pink, purple and orange lines and is a short walk from Union and Ogilvie Metra stations. You may also park at the Poetry Garage directly across from the school at 201 W. Madison. Parking can be validated at the first floor reception desk for a cost of $6, to be paid at the garage's kiosk.

If you have any questions regarding the evening's agenda or logistics, please do not hesitate to contact Harrington's Community Relations Manager: Kara Taussig,[masked] /[masked].

Even though we have Lightroom and Photoshop, my wife still greatly prefers Photoscape -- and often gets results with "one click" that would take me a long time to replicate in PS.

I enjoyed coming to this event! It was good meeting you all, and learning more via conversation & from Dirk's work. Thanks your organizing, Tom, and for hosting, Kara & all at Harrington!

This was a very nice event. It was nice to take some time and get to talk to the other photographers. I personally was able to make some good connections. I thought the instructional part was great as well. I am deducting 1 star because the description made it sound like we were going to use our own cameras to take photos so we all brought cameras with. The instructor was great

This is what I thought too... Still it was great and was nice to see you all.

I agree. I thought it was a good event but was a bit disappointed we didn't get to take pictures with our own cameras. I might not have attended if I had known it was just an instructional session. The instructor was great and the school seemed very welcoming.

I do not have a problem with meeting either before or after an event to talk and share. So far, with all the events that I have set up 2-3 members will show up. If we can get a stronger turnout for future events and one of you know of a place to meet, Starbucks, Panera, etc., then by all means let me know or recommend it and we can see what happens. Like I said Wednesday this your group as well. That is the whole point of Meetup is to be open and sharing.

Makes sense. I like the coffee idea.

Great presentation, and great discussion before the presentation. It was great to have a social meetup of photographers.

I agree, Matthew. I thought about what someone said last night that we don't all get together and chat. I remember having a very very good conversation with a bunch of people about street photography after the Polar Bear Plunge last year.

(Clicked Enter too soon.) I thought that maybe when scheduling meetups that we build in the expectation to meet up for coffee or dinner or something afterward if people are interested. That would set the tone that it's intended to be an interactive experience. That way those who are interested can stay along, those who don't don't feel they have to. Seems silly because we're part of a Meetup to be social.

Hi Everyone! Thanks for coming out last night! We hope you left with some good takeaways and it's not long before we see you back on campus.

A few of you asked about our Continuing Ed Workshops so I will email the list to Tom to send to all of you (since I can't upload it within this post). Carolina Garcia, [masked], in our Career Services Department puts the schedule together so if you'd like to be added to the mailing list regarding future workshops, just shoot her a quick email. Note, our CEU classes almost always revolve around software/recent updates and are not intended for beginners.

Also, the 8th annual student work Digital Photography Show at Harrington is 3/6 on campus from 5-7pm and the open gallery show I mentioned, "You're a Piece of Work" is Friday, 4/4 from 6-9pm at the Fulton St. Collective on 2000 W. Fulton Street. First come, first hang and all work must be ready to hang by nail or push pin and fit within a 17 X 17 in space. Kara

This was a great Meetup. A terrific turnout with an excellent exchange of ideas and technology. I particularly enjoyed the Meet & Greet portion where we had a chance to meet others and learn about and from them. Great facilities, and personnel from Harrington t made for an even better event. Thanks to everyone that came out!

Just a reminder that if you RSVP'ed to this Meetup that honoring you commitment to attend is important in that it may lead to more of these types of Meetups and shows courtesy and respect to your fellow members. We need at least TEN attendees to participate.

  • Kara T.

Hello again! We are excited to see 26+ attendees RSVPed for the event! The more the merrier.

I thought you all would be interested to hear what types of techniques will be covered in the workshop, so I asked Dirk Fletcher, your instructor, to put together a short description:

"Photographing glass and reflective objects in the studio has always presented a special set of challenges. Blending these challenges with liquids adds another layer of complexity but capturing drinks splashing is the ultimate challenge. Using an infrared delay timer the ability to capture the exact moment an ice cube breaks the surface a drink, or an Oreo drops into a glass of milk is completely possible and predictable. This workshop will explore the science and art of photographing liquids in various capacities for artistic and commercial purposes."

We look forward to hosting you next week! Let me know if you have any questions [masked].

Kara, thanks for the update and brief synopsis of the workshop. Catching droplets hitting water is something I have been trying to do, without success, for the past week or so. Yesterday I finally gave up in frustration. Hopefully Dirk can help us all with these techniques. Thanks Again.
