Skeptical Salon Movie Night! - NOVA Intelligent Design On Trial

  • This location is shown only to members

We're slowing it down a bit for this month's salon, since we haven't had a movie night in a while. Please note that we will be starting Skeptical Salon at 7:00 p.m. in case we have a movie that runs over 2 hours so we have ample discussion time.

Right now the Organizers are sorting through a number of movies that would be great for Skeptical Salon; however, if you have any suggestions, we would be more than happy to here them. Please leave the suggestions in the comment thread and please tell us how your suggestion is skeptically relevant. Looking forward to hearing your suggestions!

Sorry I missed it folks - I was EXHAUSTED after work today. I hope you all had a blast.

Hi all, This will be my first time attending a Chicago Skeptics event, and I'm not familiar with the place where we're supposed to meet. Is someone gonna be by the door at around 7:00pm tomorrow? If not, where am I supposed to go? Thanks. Good choice, by the way.

    June 25, 2014

    • Jamie B.

When the front desk guy lets you in, just tell him you're with Chicago Skeptics and he'll tell you exactly where to go.

      June 26, 2014

    • Julia

Tip for later: he didn't respond to the Skeptic name but said there was a book club happening. I figured out from these comments it was with Jennifer Newport

We're looking forward to seeing ID on Trial again! Unfortunately, we may sneak in a few minutes late and miss the beginning.

  • Michelle

This would have been my first time attending and I was very excited to be around like minded people but I had last minute change of plans and will have my stepchildren to tend to. The Samosas sounded delicious and hope everyone has a good time. Catch you guys next time!

  • Jennifer C.

Just a quick reminder that this salon will not have the usual gigantic spread; however culinary contributions are welcome!

    June 25, 2014

    • Jamie B.

I made samosas! I'll bring an ingredient list for anyone with dietary restrictions or allergies.

    Dear Skeptics,
It was a close call, but it looks like the NOVA documentary on the Dover Trial will be the film of choice for this month's Skeptic Salon!

As much as many of us wanted The Prestige to take the crown, it is a rather long movie. The NOVA documentary will still leave us time for discussion afterwards. Its full version is also available on YouTube.

    See you all Thursday!

I seriously cannot tell you all how much I love the NOVA Dover Trial episode. Back when it originally aired I watched it on my own and was enthralled and dying to experience it and discuss it with others. I'm so glad we're going to be watching it together!! Also, I might be bringing home-made samosas (depending on if they come out correctly).

This decision may come down to the wire! Should we just have folks bring what copies of their preferred nominated movie and decide on Thursday, or would that be too chaotic? There would be some paring-down just based on availability, methinks.

    June 23, 2014

    • Jennifer C.

I already posted that the final movie decision will be made tomorrow.

Movie options thus far include: The Prestige, The Dover Trial, Seeds of Death, The Master, and Kumare. If anyone has any objections to what is listed, please reply to this comment thread. Final movie decision will be made tomorrow.

What about The Master since it's loosly based on Scientology: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Master_(2012_film)

Or Kumare, the documentary about the guy who faked being a guru: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/06/03/movies/vikram-gandhis-documentary-kumare.html?_r=0

I haven't seen either of these so I can't speak to them personally, but they both seem like they may have skeptical themes.

    1 · June 11, 2014

    • Jamie B.

I only know about Kumare because I saw an interview with the guy on Colbert. The movie seemed made for skeptics, but since I never heard anyone mention it in skeptic circles I assume it must not be very good.

http://www.theinstitu... is avail on Netflix, Google Play, etc and explores gullibility.

      June 23, 2014

  • Michelle

Any word yet on which movie?

    June 23, 2014

  • Jennifer C.

I was hoping that I wouldn't have to moderate the comments section in Meetup, but given that some members have resorted to name-calling, I don't feel like I have any other choice in the matter. This is my official MOD request as the listed Event Host to please keep all discussion civil. Failure to do so will result in expulsion from Chicago Skeptics.

It looks like The Prestige is gaining ground....

    June 19, 2014

    • Marcus

If it's between that and The Illusionist I want to point out that IMO just as entertainment The Prestige ≥ The Master ≫ The Illusionist.

      June 19, 2014

    • Katie H.

It's funny how similar the illusionist and the prestige are and that they came out sort of around the same time. But I prefer the prestige too.

      June 22, 2014

  • Kenan H.

What are you guys thinking? I could watch any number of BBC documentaries. Jonathan Miller's "A Brief History of Atheism" is exceptional. Or maybe we could go really old school and watch some of the original series of James Burke's "Connections".

    Just spitballing.

    June 11, 2014

    • Jamie B.

Yah, we watched the entirety of The Secret at a previous salon.

      June 21, 2014

    • Jeff W.

Tim's Vermeer is available on Google Play, so it's definitely an option. Not sure about Skeptic content. https://play.google.co...

      June 21, 2014

  • Jeff W.

The Prestige keeps coming up. I can talk about some of the illusions. They're all real in that movie (except the obvious), whereas in The Illusionist they're all not-real. Mostly. (Tree is real).

I can think of some interesting things skeptically as well. If someone explains how a trick is done, how do they know it's the way it WAS done? How do they know it wasn't REAL magic?

    1 · June 16, 2014

    • Jairus D.

I think that I can make a case that it shows an exercise in skepticism and in misapplied skepticism, but not without referencing some spoilers.

      1 · June 21, 2014

    • Jeff W.

My fear for The Prestige is that it's long and you have to pay attention.

      June 21, 2014

  • Jennifer

And I'm toning it down in terms of smorgasbord offerings...please feel free to byob, byodrink, byotasty munchings. I've got the space, you've got the food, lets make lots of money (or, if not money, then open happy friendly, welcoming space for new folks, who are likely to bring their own snacks. Is The Prestige the winner?

    1 · June 17, 2014

  • Susan

Okay, I can bring the DVD and we'll try to come a few minutes early.

    1 · June 16, 2014

  • Susan

Haven't been to a meetup in years, but I'm looking forward to checking in since we're TAM bound! I can offer one of the suggested movies, The Prestige, on DVD if it ends up being chosen. Although it's a $1 used public library copy, I'm pretty sure the disc plays fine. Personally, I think The Prestige is a really good flick; however, I'm not sure Randi would approve of its take on magic (i.e., "real" magic vs. illusion).

    June 16, 2014

  • Adnaan

I like the idea of The Prestige or The Illusionist.

    1 · June 11, 2014

  • Marcus

Seeds of Death. It's easily the worst film suggested so far and almost certainly the only one that concludes with an unintentionally hilarious anti-GMO rap.

    June 11, 2014

  • Jeff W.

    How about Red Lights?

    June 11, 2014

    • Jennifer C.

Just read the IMDB synopsis. Sounds interesting.

      June 11, 2014

  • Jennifer C.

I was thinking along the lines of The Prestige or The Illusionist since both movies deal with the inner workings of the magic (and the magic still manages to be awesome).

Oh, it goes without saying that any recommendations for Religilous will be automatically vetoed. Sorry, but Bill Maher is not skeptically relevant, let alone is he a Skeptic. *smiles*

    1 · June 11, 2014

  • Jeff W.

I'd love to do Connections, but I'm not sure it has broad appeal. Atheism seems off topic.

    June 11, 2014

  • Jairus D.

Can we watch Signs with Mel Gibson? Please?
