Mythbusters at Museum of Science+Industry

**RSVPs for group tickets are now closed; those who haven't already prepaid or promised to pay will have to pay on their own. Do not pay online at this point; I cannot get any more group tickets. The group tickets for the Mythbusters exhibit is for the 11:00am entrance time for any who want to try to coordinate...from looking at buying online, there were still lots of tix for the 11am slot**

Saturday April 7th we'll get together at the Museum of Science and Industry to check out the Mythbusters exhibit and more! A fun experiential/experimental/explosive/exciting day!

If anyone has already checked out the exhibit, please let us know what you thought!

Thanks for taking pics Jairus! Miguel, haha, sounds cool, I might volunteer for that. Well, as long as the other volunteer isn't Jennifer Cross, bc then I don't think my hand would be safe. :-)

Good meetup - met a lot of cool, friendly people. I thought the Mythbuster exhibit was going to be bigger/longer. It was still decent, and the live show was decent. Thanks to Jennifer and Jeff for buying tickets and guiding the group!

  • Miguel A

After the live performance I went to the table with suggestions of "myths" to test (I assume mostly written by children). Some were great, but I found some humor too, like "can you give high five to someone at 50 mph without losing your hand?". Any volunteers to test it? :-)

Marvelous! And Jennifer did a great job as the organizer of the event going way far beyond duty...

    April 8, 2012

  • Pablo

Thought it was going to be a larger exhibition.

    April 8, 2012

  • Pablo

Ack! Just got there after you posted that comment. :s

Well, guest and I will probably go look at that tornado exhibit until the exhibit starts again.

    April 7, 2012

  • Jennifer

Ok...sorry, Pablo...I'm going ahead and going into the exhibit. Sorry couldn't get you the ticket.

    April 7, 2012

  • Jennifer

Pablo...come to the Mythbusters exhibit at 11:05 if it's just one of you...I have one 11:15 ticket

    April 7, 2012

  • Jairus D.

Pablo - Jen is standing in front of the giftshop with extra tickets for 11:15. Can you get a refund?

    April 7, 2012

  • Pablo

The show is 12:45 pm. Got tickets. :( guy at the booth said it was the earliest show...

For everyone taking the red line this morning, two things: (1) The SB red line is moving slowly; and (2) If you are unfamiliar with the Garfield red line stop, there is only one exit which is on the NS of Garfield Blvd. You will need to exit the red line and use the crosswalk to get to the SS of Garfield Blvd in order to catch the Eastbound #55. See you all there.

    April 6, 2012

For those buying museum tickets individually...just checked the online order system and there are 8 tix left for the 11:00 mythbusters slot, so if you want to be in the same event time as the bulk of the group, grab your tix online now :)

Hiya. Our meetup time for the mythbusters exhibit is 11:00 a.m., so that part of the event will be done by 12pm for those who want to skedaddle.

Thank you, Jennifer for the info. It has indeed been four years since I last went there and look foward to the changes.
    Kent.

    April 4, 2012

  • Jennifer

@Jairus...please give us 15 minutes notice...we all want to see the crash down. (Jen pictures great shower of non-dangerous pebbled glass as Jairus arrives clad in all black through the roof.)

    April 3, 2012

  • Jairus D.

I'm still planning on going but I won't need a ticket as I'm planning to zipcord in from a skylight.

    April 3, 2012

  • Jennifer

@Kent we'll let people know a time that is approx 45 minutes after our Mythbusters group time tomorrow after we make the reservation. It will probably be between 12:30 and 1:30...can't be more specific than that for the above reasons. As a side note, if you haven't been to the MSI in the past 3 or 4 years, you might be impressed by the return of interactivity...it's not all computer screens.

    April 3, 2012

  • kent

Furthermore the museum is a far cry from what it used to be. They have gotten rid of many of the relics and replaced many fun and interactive exhibits with dreadful neon text. The school children can see this minimalistic and potentially boring stuff on any computer.

"The event doesn't have an end time, as some people will want to stay at the museum longer than others"
I've been there scores of time (cross my heart) since I was four years old, So I won't be staying after, due to another commitment. WHEN IS IT OFICIALLY OVER?

Kent, pls read Jennifer's comment. "The event doesn't have an end time, as some people will want to stay at the museum longer than others." And the Mythbusters exhibit is also not limited to a certain duration. I spoke to Amy with group sales at MSI and she said most people take about 45 minutes to stroll through the exhibit.

    April 3, 2012

  • kent

Again. What time does it conclude (give or take). I have other things to do later in the day.

    April 3, 2012

  • Jennifer

Last time I was there, we found free street parking, but I think that was at a less busy time (mid-week)...bus/train/carpool :)

The museum has a website and parking info can be found there: http://www.msichicago.org/visit-the-museum/museum-info/getting-here/

    April 3, 2012

  • Jennifer C.

@ Matt - Parking is $20 for the general public. If I remember correctly (but do NOT hold me to this 100%) parking on the west side street which is South Cornell Avenue is free. Now keep in mind that I haven't taken a car to the MSI in over a year, so the street may now be metered.

    April 3, 2012

  • Matt S.

Is it free parking at the museum? That would be killer.

    April 3, 2012

  • Marcus

On Cthulhu's tentacles I promise to be there and pay in cash on Saturday

    1 · April 3, 2012

  • Jennifer

I do not know if we'll need to pick up all the group tickets at once or if we can leave them at the desk, but if we do need to get them all at once, I'll make sure to be available to get tix to people who want to just come right before our Mythbusters time rather than meeting at 10.

    April 3, 2012

  • Jennifer

We'll meet at 10 am. We won't know which Mythbusters slot we get untill we make the reservation tomorrow, it will likely be late morning 10:30, 11, 11:45...something like that. We'll announce it Weds. Folks who want to gather at 10 will wander the museum until our exhibit time. The event doesn't have an end time, as some people will want to stay at the museum longer than others.

    April 3, 2012

  • Dave S.

As I type this I am looking at the crisp $20 bill with which I will most definitely and assuredly pay for my group-rate ticket on Saturday.

    2 · April 3, 2012

  • Miguel A

If I understand it correctly 10am is the time we meet (in front of the main gift shop, right?), but the time slot for the exhibition should be somewhat later so we have time to gather and then walk to the place. If the idea is to use the 10am slot then we would need to arrive earlier.

    April 3, 2012

  • Jennifer C.

@ Jennifer - I was just going to buy my ticket to the exhibit when I arrived since my entry is free and my ticket will only be $5. And yes, I am intentionally and unabashedly plugging membership purchasing for the MSI on our comment wall. :-D

    1 · April 3, 2012

It starts at 10:00AM, but when does it conclude?

    April 3, 2012

  • Derrick

Anyone heading south past Clark & Fullerton? Have room for 1 more? If not I'm taking the Red Line. Contact me through my group profile on Meetup or call me.

    April 3, 2012

  • Jennifer

Sorry this is so complicated...the above price of $19.80 is only if you're paying by paypal. If you've committed to come by Weds morning but are bringing cash/check, it's 18.75. If you're not sure, you can pay regular non-group prices.

    April 2, 2012

Hi, all...working out the technicalities of group ticket buying...may mean extra emails and needing to re-RSVP...sorry.

Lynne--stay tuned, I think we will probably go w/ Miguel's suggestion. Jennifer Cross--thanks, I think we can plan on meeting in front of the main gift shop (we'll probably announce to all as we get closer to Saturday). Miguel--great suggestion, thanks! It makes sense to me. Let's wait to hear Jennifer's thoughts.

    April 2, 2012

  • Miguel A

If less that 15 people prepay, refund the prepayments done in Meetup and just agree on a time slot for everybody to get individual tickets.

    April 2, 2012

  • Miguel A

If we want the group rate we need to make a reservation. If it were me I would set RSVPs conditional to prepay (in Meetup) and set a deadline, then if 15 or more people paid by the deadline make the reservation with the people who has prepaid. Anybody who wants to join after that could get individual tickets, all they need to know is for what time slot, and when and where to meet.

    April 2, 2012

  • Jennifer C.

Sunil - In front of the main gift shop us a good place for the entire group to meet. Anyone taking public transit from the city: don't bother trying to get to Michigan Ave to hop on the #10. Fastest way (for me at least) is the red line to Garfield, then the #55. The MSI is its last stop so you will be dropped off right at the front door.

Hi Sunil and Jen. I was just talking about this with my "+1", wondering what we need to do to get the group rate. We've confirmed with each other that we're going, so I just need to know how to pay and/or reserve the tickets. Thanks!

    April 1, 2012

  • Jennifer

Sunil...you have just taken a giant worry off my shoulders! The trick will be that we'll probably have to pay ahead for group tickets and/or guarantee payment at the time of booking for group tix. Find out how late we can book tix before making a payment so we can be sure to include everyone who wants to go without buying extra. Thanks again for spearheading this!

Jennifer (organizer)/All-- It looks like we have a nice group here so I can take the action getting more info on Group Sales and finding out which time slots are available for the Mythbusters exhibit on Saturday. Also, as for meeting spots, I think we can meet at the front/side of the gift shop at 10am. Jennifer Cross, since you're a member and are probably more familiar with MSI, do you have any suggestions on a good meeting spot? Thanks! I'm already excited!

    April 1, 2012

  • Jennifer

Okay folks, if we can get 15 or more people committing to going to this event we can get discounted group tickets. The Mythbusters exhibit is an additional cost. Regular admission adult: $15, adult Chicago resident: $13 for the museum; admission to Mythbusters exhibit: $10. If we get the group rate, general admission Adult $12.75, mythbusters admission $6. In addition to the Mythbusters exhibit being an extra cost, you have to sign up for a specific time, which we'll need to do in advance.
